Backend / Database Engineer AWS-Native, Event-Driven Annuity Reinsurance Platform Role Overview We are seeking a Backend / Database Engineer to build and support the core services and data foundation of a modern AWS-native annuity reinsurance platform. This role focuses on backend development, API design, database engineering, event-driven processing, data quality, and cloud-native architectures supporting contracts, transactions, funds, treaties, cessions, billing, reporting, and auditability. Key Responsibilities Backend Engineering Design and develop scalable services for: Contract Management Transaction Processing Fund Processing Treaty Administration Reinsurance Placement & Cession Management Billing & Settlement Reporting & Audit Tracking Responsibilities include: Developing microservices Building business APIs Managing integrations Implementing validations and business rules Ensuring transactional integrity API Development Design and maintain API-first solutions for: Contract, Transaction, Fund, and Treaty ingestion Placement requests and reporting Webhooks and partner integrations Key areas: REST APIs OpenAPI / Swagger Authentication & authorization API versioning Error handling and resiliency Event-Driven Architecture Build asynchronous workflows using AWS-native services. Responsibilities: Event design and publishing Event consumption Retry and replay mechanisms Dead-letter queue management Idempotent processing patterns Database Engineering Design and optimize databases supporting: Treaties Contracts Transactions Funds Cessions Billings Reports Audit Records Responsibilities: Data modeling Database design Query optimization Index tuning Backup & recovery Performance monitoring Data retention strategies AWS Cloud Development Build cloud-native solutions using: Compute: Lambda, ECS, EKS, Fargate Integration: EventBridge, SNS, SQS, Step Functions Data: Aurora PostgreSQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, S3 Security: IAM, Cognito, Secrets Manager Monitoring: CloudWatch, X-Ray Data Quality & Operational Excellence Implement validation and reconciliation frameworks. Build audit trails, logging, monitoring, and ing. Support reporting, API activity monitoring, and operational reliability. DevOps & Automation Support CI/CD implementation. Automate testing and deployments. Participate in Infrastructure as Code initiatives. Support Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS deployment services. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field. 5+ years of backend engineering experience. 5+ years of database design and development experience. Experience developing cloud-native applications. Strong background in microservices and API-driven architectures. Technical Skills Backend Development Experience with one or more: Java / Spring Boot Python / FastAPI .NET Core Node.js / TypeScript Databases Relational PostgreSQL Aurora PostgreSQL SQL Server NoSQL DynamoDB MongoDB Strong knowledge of: Data Modeling Query Optimization Indexing Strategies Transaction Management Database Performance Tuning AWS Services Lambda ECS / EKS EventBridge SNS / SQS Step Functions Aurora PostgreSQL DynamoDB S3 CloudWatch APIs REST APIs OpenAPI / Swagger JSON Webhooks API Security Event-Driven Systems Event-Driven Architecture Asynchronous Processing Message Queues Event Sourcing Concepts Retry & Resiliency Patterns Dead-Letter Queues Preferred Domain Experience Experience in: Reinsurance Annuities Life Insurance Financial Services Knowledge of treaty administration, cessions, billing, settlement, and annuity processing is highly preferred.
