JOB DESCRIPTION FOR POWER SYSTEM STUDY ENGINEER
Qualification:
Post-Graduation in Power Systems Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Renewable Energy
(MTech / ME).
Job-Role:
Power System Study Engineer
Experience:
Minimum 10 to 12 professional experience in Power System Studies with Hands-on experience in
Renewable power plant studies, industrial power system studies with emphasis on relay
coordination and arc flash hazard analysis.
Criteria:
Experience in a lead position in power system studies and grid integration studies for Renewable
Power Plants. Should have profound knowledge about renewable generation (Solar PV inverters,
wind energy systems, BESS), HVDC, FACTS (STATCOM, SVC, SCG). Should have hands-on experience
working on software like PSCAD, PSS/E, ETAP, Dig SILENT and should have delivered studies using
the software

Must possess the required Skill for performing the following studies:
A) EHV System – Substation & Transmission
Experience in Grid integration
o Shall be able to develop models / in thoroughly understanding OEM Dynamic model
using their manual / ability to test and validate the OEM model and identify issues and
solving through vendor before using it.
o Studies like Transient and Steady state stability studies, voltage stability studies,
harmonic studies, power quality studies, LVRT (Low Voltage Ride Through) and Fault
Ride Through studies. Reactive Power compensation studies (sizing of Filters)
o Experience in Contingency analysis for designing grid components.
o Benchmarking studies of PSSE and PSCAD models for renewable power plants
o User defined model preparation in PSSE using FORTRAN/FLECS coding
o Experience in writing python codes for automating activities of PSSE/PSCAD
o Preparation of high-quality study reports as well as review of the reports submitted
o Client facing for discussions of the reports and obtaining sign off
Knowledge & Working hands on Experience in the following software:
o PSS-E
o Dig SILENT,
o ETAP
o PSCAD, EMTP-RV,
A) Renewables ( Must Skills)
Shall have knowledge on Modelling of Renewable Energy sources (especially Solar, BESS &
Wind).
Load flow studies, Reactive power assessment, and contingency analysis to assess the
overloading elements in the network as per the Renewable Energy Systems (RES) capacity
addition plans/scenarios.
Short circuit current calculation, Equipment Sizing and selection of CB
Shall be well versed in performing the Dynamic Studies Fault Ride through studies (LVRT, HVRT,
FRT)
Shall have through hands on experience in performing the Harmonic analysis using DIGSILENT
and ETAP and shall be able to determine the filter Size.
Assessment of the operational challenges posed by Different RES technologies- Solar, Wind
Verification of grid code compliance before energization of the power plant under consideration
of all relevant operating scenarios with respect to Static, Dynamic, Transient Stability Studies,
control interaction studies and Power quality analysis
The following studies are deemed to be familiar
‘b) Utility Substation / Industrial Substation ( it is deemed to have experience in this field)
Load Flow, Short Circuit Calculation
Relay Coordination
Experience in performing motor acceleration and re-acceleration studies as per process
requirement for motor grouping.
Experience in performing short circuit analysis and sizing the switchgear and circuit breaker as
per the standard.
Understanding /suggesting protection philosophies and performing relay coordination according
to international standards/best practices
Experience in performing arc flash analysis as per the international standard.
‘c) Preferred Skills (i.e working experience in the project):
Experience in design of power generation mix for microgrid and battery storage systems using
software like HOMER, PLEXOS or similar.
Experience in protection relay selection, coordination studies – over current / Earth fault, Unit
protection, distance protection, motor protection, generator protection and grid tie-in.
Modelling of Phase Shifting Transformer.
Good experience in handling customers and Utilities/Off takers related to the approval of Grid
impact studies.
Experience in HVDC, STATCOM projects including Electromagnetic field (Compatibility) studies.
‘D) Insulation Coordination Study skills (i.e working experience in the project):
Sensitivity: LNT Construction Internal Use
Experience in Insulation coordination studies - cable energization, transformer energization,
reactor energization, TRV, direct and indirect lightning strike study, very fast transient over
voltage (GIS) using PSCD or similar, Switching study, Power oscillation damping, Sub-
Synchronous Resonance study.
Experience in performing Ferro-resonance Studies associated with Transformer, EHV Cable.
Experience in performing the Secondary Arc current extinction study for performing successful
auto reclosure study.
Selection of Surge Arrester Duty such as Residual Voltage, Energy Level
General
Candidate shall be very well familiar with the IEC, IEEE, and other industrial standards.
Detailed Analysis of the available technological solutions in market for performing system
studies.
Ability to assume the typical input data parameter for each study as per project specifications
and standards based on the past experience where the actual input data/parameters are not
available.
Good knowledge and interpretation of various country specific Grid codes (requirements related
to Middle East region is preferred)
Able to provide various optimization possibilities along with compliance to Grid code
requirements.
Knowledge in identifying the issues/challenges which may arise during grid integration and
suggesting solutions.
