About Seven Labs
Seven Labs is looking for a highly skilled Senior Node.js Developer to design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems.
This role is intended for an experienced backend developer who can take ownership of complete backend features, make sound technical decisions, work with databases and distributed systems, and contribute to building production-ready software.
You will be expected to go beyond simply writing code — you should understand architecture, performance, security, data integrity, testing, debugging, and maintainability.
Key ResponsibilitiesBackend & API Development
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend services using Node.js.
- Build robust RESTful APIs and, where required, GraphQL APIs.
- Work with frameworks such as Express.js and/or NestJS.
- Develop clean, modular, maintainable, and production-ready backend code.
- Handle API validation, error handling, logging, authentication, authorization, and data integrity.
Architecture & System Design
- Contribute to backend architecture and technical design decisions.
- Design services capable of handling scalability, reliability, and increasing application workloads.
- Work with microservices and event-driven architectures where appropriate.
- Identify architectural bottlenecks and recommend practical solutions.
Database Management
- Design efficient database schemas and data models.
- Work with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Work with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.
- Write and optimize complex queries.
- Understand indexing, transactions, relationships, concurrency, and database performance.
- Work with ORMs/ODMs such as Prisma and Mongoose.
Security
- Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms.
- Work with JWT, OAuth 2.0, RBAC, and related security practices.
- Follow secure coding practices and protect applications against common vulnerabilities, including OWASP Top 10.
- Ensure proper validation, authorization, data protection, and API security.
Code Quality & Testing
- Write clean, modular, reusable, and testable TypeScript code.
- Develop unit and integration tests using tools such as Jest, Mocha, or Supertest.
- Participate in code reviews and maintain high engineering standards.
- Identify and resolve bugs and production issues effectively.
Performance & Reliability
- Identify and resolve application and database performance bottlenecks.
- Work with caching technologies such as Redis.
- Optimize API response times, database queries, and resource utilization.
- Understand application observability, logging, monitoring, and error handling.
Collaboration & Mentorship
- Collaborate with Frontend, QA, DevOps, and other engineering teams.
- Participate in technical discussions and contribute to engineering decisions.
- Conduct code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback.
- Mentor junior and mid-level developers when required.
- Communicate technical concepts and decisions clearly.
Required Technical Skills
- 4+ years of professional experience in Node.js/backend development.
- Strong proficiency in Node.js and JavaScript (ES6+).
- Strong knowledge of TypeScript, including interfaces, generics, types, and strict typing.
- Strong hands-on experience with Express.js.
- Experience with NestJS is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP protocols, status codes, headers, authentication, and API design.
- Strong knowledge of at least one relational database such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
- Hands-on experience with MongoDB or another NoSQL database.
- Experience with Prisma, Mongoose, or similar ORM/ODM technologies.
- Strong understanding of Git, branching strategies, pull requests, and code reviews.
- Experience with Swagger/OpenAPI or similar API documentation standards.
- Strong understanding of asynchronous programming, promises, event loop, error handling, and concurrency in Node.js.
- Ability to debug complex backend and production issues independently.
Preferred Skills
Experience with any of the following will be an advantage:
- Docker and containerized applications.
- Basic understanding of Kubernetes.
- Redis and caching strategies.
- Message brokers such as RabbitMQ or Apache Kafka.
- Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- CI/CD using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar tools.
- WebSockets and real-time communication.
- GraphQL.
- AI/LLM API integrations.
- Microservices and event-driven systems.
- Application monitoring, logging, and observability tools.
What We Expect From You
At the 4+ year experience level, we expect you to demonstrate strong ownership and engineering judgment.
You should be able to:
- Independently develop complete backend features from requirement analysis through deployment.
- Understand the difference between a solution that simply works and one that is production-ready, secure, scalable, maintainable, and observable.
- Make appropriate technical decisions based on business and engineering requirements.
- Design APIs and database structures with long-term maintainability in mind.
- Debug complex problems across the application, database, and deployment layers.
- Identify performance, security, and reliability issues proactively.
- Review and improve existing code rather than only developing new features.
- Communicate technical decisions clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Take ownership of assigned work and deliver with minimal supervision.
Interview Process
Our selection process is designed to evaluate both technical depth and practical backend engineering ability:
- Technical Assessment – A balanced assessment focused primarily on technical skills, including JavaScript/TypeScript, backend fundamentals, problem-solving, databases, APIs, and related engineering concepts.
- Practical Coding Round – Hands-on coding focused on real-world backend development and problem-solving.
- Technical Interview – Detailed discussion covering Node.js, TypeScript, APIs, databases, system design, security, performance, debugging, and previous project experience.
- Final Discussion – Discussion regarding role expectations, compensation, availability, and mutual fit.
