About the Role:
This role is for an ongoing member of the team who will work with the Embedded team. Primary tasks
will be to develop the ICV (in-car video) software applications. Work will be allocated in the sprint. The
hardware platform to support development will be supplied and must be kept in a state that can support
ongoing work. This may include sourcing and expensing local SIM cards, and providing local wired LAN
or WiFi and power.
Profile:
This role is suited to an engineer who enjoys building device-side software on Linux-based edge devices
and deploying solutions that operate reliably in real-world, mission-critical environments.
You will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining applications and services
written primarily in C and C++, supported by Python and shell scripting, on Linux and embedded Linux
platforms. You will integrate the product range with Linux networking stacks, video recording and
streaming solutions, Bluetooth services, third-party SDKs, security and AI libraries, and hardware
peripherals including TPMs, GNSS/GPS receivers, GPIO interfaces, and cellular connectivity modules
(4G/5G).
The systems you build will be deployed at scale and must meet the expectations of public-sector
customers, most notably law-enforcement organizations, where reliability, security, and data integrity are
paramount.
The role involves working across the full software development lifecycle, including requirements
definition, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support. You will
collaborate closely with backend, platform, and QA engineers for configuration, installation scripts,
logging, provisioning, customer support, diagnostics and evidence handling.
Prior experience in embedded Linux, AI or evidence-management domains is beneficial but not
required. More important is a strong foundation in Linux-based systems development, multithreading
expertise, an understanding of video solutions, secure and networked edge devices, and the ability to
deliver robust, maintainable solutions suitable for safety-critical and compliance-driven environments.
Essential Skills and Experience:
1. Strong proficiency in C, C++, Python
2. Experience using scripting languages such as Python or shell to support development, testing, or
deployment
3. Proficiency with Linux development environments, debugging, profiling, Git and build systems
4. Proficiency in designing and implementing multithreaded and concurrent systems
5. Solid understanding of networked systems, including TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP/S, TLS, and device-to-cloud
communication
6. Familiarity with developing video recording and streaming applications or multimedia streaming
protocols such as RTSP, RTP, HLS or WebRTC
7. Demonstrated experience building long-running device-side services, agents, or daemons
8. Experience working with secure systems, including encrypted communications, secure storage, and
system hardening
9. Comfortable working in an Agile development environment and collaborating across disciplines
10. Familiarity with virtualization technologies (Docker, VirtualBox or Hyper-V)
Desired Skills and Experience: (The following are an advantage)
1. Experience with web backend integration
2. Basic knowledge of HTTP servers, databases, and SQL queries
3. Experience deploying AI models for video, audio, or sensor processing on edge or embedded platforms
4. Knowledge of embedded and device security, including secure boot, certificate management,
hardware-backed key storage (TPM), and encrypted communications
5. Experience working on large-scale connected device fleets
6. Familiarity with Linux networking internals and performance optimization
7. Familiarity with video compression standards and developing applications using multimedia platforms such as GStreamer SDK and FFmpeg
8. Experience with IP-based physical security product integration standards such as ONVIF
9. Knowledge of common network architectures (routers, switches, proxies, etc.)
10. Excellent troubleshooting skills using network analysis tools
11. Demonstrable ability to plan and manage own timelines and deliver applications on time and in line with business needs
12. Experience in configuring, optimizing, and developing media streaming servers
13. Excellent presentation, communication, and documentation skills, together with the relevant tertiary qualifications
Experience:
- Public sector / law enforcement software: 3 years (Preferred)
- C++: 9 years (Required)
- Embedded Linux: 9 years (Required)
- Python scripting: 9 years (Required)
- ONVIF: 9 years (Required)
