Position Overview :
The Electrical Engineer – Transmission Line is responsible for planning, design review, construction supervision, testing, commissioning, operation support, and maintenance of high-voltage and extra-high-voltage transmission lines. The role involves ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective execution of transmission line projects while complying with applicable technical standards, statutory regulations, quality requirements, and project schedules.
The engineer shall coordinate with clients, consultants, contractors, utility authorities, survey teams, civil teams, and commissioning engineers to ensure successful execution of transmission line projects from concept to commissioning.
Key Job Responsibilities :
A. Engineering & Design Responsibilities
- Review transmission line route surveys, alignment profiles, and tower spotting reports.
- Review and verify transmission line designs for voltage levels ranging from 33 kV to 765 kV.
- Study and interpret transmission line drawings, route maps, tower schedules, and stringing charts.
- Review tower foundation designs and coordinate with civil engineering teams.
- Verify conductor, earth wire, OPGW, insulator, hardware fitting, and tower specifications.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards such as IS, IEC, IEEE, CEA, CBIP, and utility specifications.
- Review sag-tension calculations and conductor clearance requirements.
- Assist in optimization of transmission line routing to minimize project cost and environmental impact.
- Evaluate design modifications arising from site constraints and right-of-way issues.
B. Survey & Route Alignment Responsibilities
- Participate in reconnaissance surveys and route selection studies.
- Coordinate detailed route surveys using GPS, Total Station, Drone Survey, and GIS tools.
- Verify tower locations and tower spotting plans.
- Identify route obstacles including roads, railways, rivers, forests, pipelines, and communication lines.
- Ensure statutory clearances and right-of-way requirements are incorporated into the project design.
- Review survey data and recommend engineering solutions for difficult terrain.
C. Construction & Site Execution Responsibilities
- Supervise transmission line construction activities at site.
- Monitor tower foundation excavation, reinforcement, concreting, and curing activities.
- Supervise tower erection using cranes, derricks, gin poles, or helicopter methods where applicable.
- Monitor conductor stringing operations and ensure adherence to approved procedures.
- Ensure correct installation of insulators, hardware fittings, vibration dampers, spacers, and accessories.
- Coordinate logistics for transportation and handling of transmission line materials.
- Ensure construction activities are completed as per approved drawings and technical specifications.
- Resolve site engineering issues and provide technical guidance to field teams.
- Monitor contractor productivity and construction progress.
D. Testing & Commissioning Responsibilities
- Participate in pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
- Verify tower earthing resistance values.
- Inspect conductor joints, compression joints, and jumper connections.
- Ensure proper installation and testing of OPGW and communication systems.
- Coordinate line charging activities with utility authorities and load dispatch centers.
- Conduct final line inspections prior to energization.
- Prepare punch lists and ensure closure of all deficiencies.
- Support reliability and performance testing of transmission assets.
E. Operation & Maintenance Responsibilities
- Monitor transmission line performance and reliability.
- Conduct routine line patrols and inspections.
- Analyze transmission line faults and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate preventive and predictive maintenance activities.
- Monitor condition of conductors, insulators, towers, and grounding systems.
- Ensure vegetation management and right-of-way maintenance.
- Assist in emergency restoration during line outages and natural disasters.
- Maintain transmission line asset records and maintenance history.
F. Quality Assurance & Quality Control Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with approved Inspection and Test Plans (ITP).
- Review material test certificates and vendor quality documents.
- Conduct stage-wise inspections of foundations, tower erection, and stringing activities.
- Verify quality of concrete, reinforcement steel, and structural components.
- Maintain quality records and inspection reports.
- Ensure all non-conformities are documented and corrected.
G. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Responsibilities
- Ensure strict compliance with project HSE requirements.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Monitor safe work practices during tower erection and conductor stringing.
- Ensure proper use of PPE by all site personnel.
- Identify and mitigate construction and electrical hazards.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective action implementation.
- Ensure environmental compliance during construction activities.
- Promote a zero-accident safety culture.
H. Planning & Project Management Responsibilities
- Prepare project schedules and monitor progress against milestones.
- Coordinate with procurement, logistics, and construction teams.
- Assist in project budgeting and cost control.
- Monitor material consumption and wastage.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
- Identify project risks and develop mitigation plans.
- Support project closure and handover activities.
I. Documentation & Reporting Responsibilities
- Prepare technical reports and engineering documentation.
- Review and maintain as-built drawings.
- Prepare material reconciliation reports.
- Maintain site records, inspection reports, and commissioning records.
- Prepare progress presentations for management and clients.
- Coordinate documentation required for statutory approvals and project handover.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree/ Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
- Master's Degree in Power Systems (Preferred).
- Professional certification in Transmission Line Engineering (Preferred).
Experience Requirements :
Junior Engineer
- 0–3 years of experience in transmission line projects.
Engineer
- 3–7 years of experience in transmission line design, construction, or commissioning.
Senior Engineer
- 7–12 years of experience in EHV transmission line projects.
Lead Engineer
- 12+ years of experience in transmission line project management and execution.
