ABOUT VIDHI

The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy (“Vidhi”) is an independent think tank doing legal research to make better laws and improve governance for the public good. Vidhi is committed to producing legal research of the highest standard with the aim of informing public debate and contributing to improved governance. Vidhi works with Ministries of the Government of India and State Governments, as well as other public institutions, providing research and drafting support at various stages of law-making. Vidhi also conducts and disseminates independent research in areas of legal reform which it believes is critical to India’s future.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Research Fellows at Vidhi work closely with their teams to conduct legal and policy research, draft publications, and contribute to evidence-based law and governance reform.

In this role, the Fellow will begin their term with the Crime & Punishment team, which works on improving the responsiveness and effectiveness of the criminal justice system through research on criminalisation, criminal law, law enforcement, and correctional institutions in India. Alongside this, the Fellow will also be part of an institutional pool of researchers who work with other teams during their tenure, based on organisational needs and individual strengths.

Key responsibilities include:

Undertaking high quality legal, quantitative and qualitative research;
Engaging with government officials, civil society, academics and relevant stakeholders on ongoing and new projects in conceptualising reports and drafting legislation;
Preparing quality reports, research notes and presentations;
Organising and participating in meetings and consultations with concerned stakeholders for informing and disseminating Vidhi’s research work;
Writing articles, blogs and research papers, making explanatory videos on relevant topics, and participating in podcasts to disseminate Vidhi’s research work;
Ideating and executing new projects including communication outputs and dissemination.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential

Undergraduate degree in law;
0-1 years of demonstrable work experience in the domain of criminal justice or any other related
field of research.
Excellent research and writing/drafting skills.

Desirable

Postgraduate degree in law, criminology, or public policy, or a related field;
Experience in interacting with government officials, civil society organizations and concerned
communities;
Experience in fieldwork, ethnographic and empirical research;
Prior publications in journals and newspapers;

LOCATION AND REMUNERATION

This is a full-time position based out of Delhi.

Remuneration will be competitive, in line with experience and existing structure at Vidhi.
