Job Description (JD)

Position: School Librarian
Department: Library / Learning Resources Centre

Job Summary

A School Librarian is responsible for managing the school library, promoting reading habits, and supporting students and teachers in accessing books, reference materials, and digital learning resources. The role focuses on developing literacy skills, research ability, and a strong reading culture among students.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and maintain the school library and its resources.
Organize, catalog, and classify books using a proper library system.
Issue and return books, and maintain accurate records of circulation.
Guide students in selecting appropriate books for reading and study.
Promote reading habits through storytelling sessions, book fairs, and reading programs.
Maintain an updated library database (manual or digital/software-based).
Ensure proper arrangement, labeling, and preservation of books and materials.
Purchase, recommend, and update books, journals, and reference materials.
Conduct library periods for different classes and support curriculum-based reading.
Assist teachers and students in research and reference work.
Organize competitions like reading challenges, book reviews, and quizzes.
Maintain discipline and a quiet learning environment in the library.
Coordinate with management for library development and budgeting.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science (B.Lib / B.Lib.Sc.) or Master’s (M.Lib / M.Lib.Sc.) preferred.
Basic computer knowledge and familiarity with library management software.
Good communication and organizational skills.

Experience

Fresher or 1–5 years of experience in school/college library preferred.
Experience in digital library management is an advantage.

Skills Required

Strong organizational and cataloging skills
Communication and student guidance ability
Knowledge of books, literature, and reference materials
Computer proficiency (library software, MS Office)
Patience and attention to detail
Event planning for reading activities

Salary Range (India)

Depending on experience, institution, and qualifications

Maintain discipline and proper usage of library resources.
Organize library events, book exhibitions, and reading weeks.
