Full job description

Purpose

The Laboratory In-Charge is responsible for the overall management of the laboratory, ensuring accurate test results, quality assurance, patient safety, staff supervision, equipment maintenance, inventory control, and compliance with applicable healthcare standards and organizational policies.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Laboratory Operations

Supervise daily laboratory activities.
Ensure accurate and timely processing of samples.
Verify laboratory reports before release (where applicable).
Monitor workflow and turnaround time (TAT).
Ensure uninterrupted laboratory services.

2. Quality Management

Implement Quality Management System (QMS).
Monitor Internal Quality Control (IQC).
Coordinate External Quality Assurance (EQAS).
Investigate quality issues.
Maintain quality records.
Conduct corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

3. Staff Management

Supervise laboratory technicians and assistants.
Prepare duty rosters.
Monitor staff attendance and performance.
Conduct orientation for new staff.
Identify training needs.
Evaluate staff competency.

4. Equipment Management

Ensure calibration of laboratory equipment.
Coordinate preventive maintenance.
Maintain equipment logbooks.
Report equipment breakdowns.
Coordinate with service engineers.
Verify equipment performance after repairs.

5. Inventory Management

Monitor reagent consumption.
Maintain minimum stock levels.
Prepare purchase requests.
Check expiry dates.
Prevent stock shortages.
Maintain inventory records.

6. Sample Management

Ensure proper patient identification.
Verify sample labeling.
Monitor sample transportation.
Ensure proper storage conditions.
Reject unsuitable specimens according to policy.
Maintain specimen traceability.

7. Safety & Infection Control

Ensure staff use appropriate PPE.
Follow infection control guidelines.
Implement biomedical waste segregation.
Maintain laboratory cleanliness.
Report accidents and incidents.
Ensure fire and emergency preparedness.

8. Documentation

Maintain SOP files.
Maintain quality records.
Record temperature logs.
Maintain maintenance records.
Keep training records.
Prepare monthly laboratory reports.

9. Compliance

Ensure compliance with organizational policies.
Follow applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.
Participate in internal and external audits.
Implement audit recommendations.
Ensure confidentiality of patient information.

10. Coordination

Coordinate with doctors regarding critical values.
Communicate with nursing departments.
Coordinate with the purchase department.
Support HR for staffing and training.
Work closely with administration on laboratory operations.

Daily Responsibilities

Open the laboratory and check readiness.
Verify equipment functionality.
Review temperature logs.
Monitor Quality Control results.
Supervise sample collection.
Ensure timely reporting.
Check inventory.
Resolve operational issues.
Monitor housekeeping.
Complete end-of-day documentation.

Monthly Responsibilities

Conduct stock verification.
Review Quality Indicators.
Analyze turnaround time (TAT).
Schedule equipment maintenance.
Conduct staff meetings.
Organize staff training.
Submit monthly reports to management.
Review incident reports.
Update SOPs if required.
Plan departmental improvements.
