Microbiology Lab Technician specializing in Poultry Sampling plays a critical role in food safety, quality assurance, and disease surveillance by collecting and analyzing samples from poultry farms, processing plants, and final products. [1, 2, 3]Job SummaryThe Microbiology Lab Technician monitors, isolates, and identifies bacterial loads and pathogens (such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Campylobacter) in poultry tissue, environmental surfaces, feed, and water. Their primary objective is to ensure regulatory compliance (such as USDA FSIS or local food safety standards) and prevent zoonotic disease outbreaks. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]Core Duties & Responsibilities1. Sample Collection and Processing

Execute field and facility sampling: Perform complex sampling methodologies including Whole-Carcass Rinse (WCR), neck skin/tissue excision, and environmental gauze cloth or boot swabbing. [1, 2, 3]
Maintain sample integrity: Adhere strictly to aseptic techniques using sterile tools (scalpels, forceps) to prevent external contamination and cross-contamination between batches. [1]
Prepare sample matrices: Process diverse diagnostic materials including whole-bird rinsates, blended skin/muscle tissue, poultry feed, and facility water. [1, 2, 3]

2. Laboratory Analysis and Testing

Media & culture preparation: Formulate, sterilize, and quality-check agar plates and liquid non-selective enrichment media (such as buffered peptone water).
Microbial isolation & enumeration: Perform serial dilutions, plate streaking, and pour plate techniques to quantify Total Plate Count (TPC), Enterobacteriaceae, and total coliforms.
Molecular diagnostics: Use Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing for rapid, highly sensitive pathogen detection, as well as serological testing (ELISA).
Antibiotic sensitivity testing: Conduct susceptibility assays on isolated bacterial strains to screen for antibiotic-resistant pathogens. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

3. Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance

Maintain GLP compliance: Execute all daily tasks in strict alignment with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), ISO standards, and regulatory bio-safety guidelines. [1]
Equipment calibration: Operate, clean, and calibrate critical laboratory equipment including autoclaves, incubators, biosafety cabinets, and PCR thermocyclers. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Documentation: Record precise data inputs, log sample chain-of-custodies, and maintain detailed data files for internal audits and safety compliance reviews. [1]

Job Requirements & Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Food Science, or a closely related biological field. [1]
Technical Skills:
Proven experience handling pathogens under Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) conditions.
Proficiency in culture-based microbiology (plating, colony counting) and molecular biology techniques (PCR).
Familiarity with poultry anatomy for post-mortem tissue harvesting and excision methods. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, strict adherence to safety protocols, and effective team communication.

Working Conditions

Environment: Division between controlled, sterile laboratory rooms and active poultry production or slaughterhouse floors.
Physical Demands: Requires prolonged standing, repetitive pipetting, and the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gowns, sterile gloves, and respiratory masks (N95). [1, 2, 3, 4]
