Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Bookkeeper / Payroll & Taxation Officer to manage day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll processing, VAT submissions, and taxation-related duties. The successful candidate will ensure accurate financial records, compliance with UK payroll and tax regulations, and timely reporting.
Key ResponsibilitiesBookkeeping Duties
- Maintain accurate financial records and ledgers
- Process purchase invoices, sales invoices, receipts, and payments
- Perform bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Prepare monthly management reports and cash flow summaries
- Assist with year-end accounts preparation
Payroll Responsibilities
- Process weekly/monthly payroll accurately and on time
- Maintain employee payroll records and pension deductions
- Calculate PAYE, National Insurance, SSP, SMP, and holiday pay
- Submit RTI reports to HMRC
- Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation
- Liaise with employees regarding payroll queries
Taxation & Compliance
- Prepare and submit VAT returns under Making Tax Digital (MTD)
- Assist with Corporation Tax and Self-Assessment information
- Support CIS returns where applicable
- Maintain compliance with HMRC regulations
- Assist external accountants during audits and year-end reporting
Administrative Duties
- Maintain confidential financial records
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities
- Communicate with clients, suppliers, and HMRC when required
- Ensure deadlines are met accurately
Skills & Qualifications
- Proven experience in bookkeeping, payroll, and UK taxation
- Strong knowledge of VAT, PAYE, CIS, and HMRC requirements
- Experience with accounting software such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent
- Excellent numerical and analytical skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- AAT qualification or equivalent
- Payroll certification (desirable)
- Experience working in an accountancy practice (preferred)
