Quality Inspector - Casting Visual & Dimension Inspection
1. ROLE OVERVIEW Role Title Quality Inspector - Casting Visual & Dimension Inspection (Quality Department - Foundry Inspection & Compliance) Role Nature This is not a helper, packing checker, or documentation-only quality role. This is a hands-on inspection-focused foundry quality role. The candidate will: Experience of Manhole Covers & other sanitary castings Inspect castings visually at finishing, machining, painting, and dispatch stages Check dimensions as per drawing, customer specification, and inspection plan Identify common casting defects and decide OK / rework / rejection status Use measuring instruments, gauges, templates, and fitment checks correctly Record inspection findings and communicate defect trends to production Do load and other tests for sample of casting check (Not mandatory) The goal of the role is to prevent defective manhole cover and ductile iron castings from reaching the customer.
2. IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE Experience Required 3-7 years professional experience in quality inspection Iron Foundry / casting / heavy engineering inspection exposure required Prior ductile iron / cast iron manhole cover inspection mandatory Hands-on experience with visual and dimensional inspection Avoid: Pure helper, packing, store, or dispatch-only profiles Quality documentation-only candidates with no shop-floor inspection experience Lab testing-only profiles who have not inspected finished castings Candidates who cannot read basic drawings or measuring instruments Education ITI / Diploma in Mechanical, Metallurgy, Foundry Technology, or Quality preferred 12th pass candidates may be considered if inspection experience is strong Degree is secondary to practical inspection judgement and instrument accuracy Salary Benchmark (Howrah / Kolkata) Rs.20,000 - Rs.30,000/month Depending on: Experience Casting inspection exposure Drawing and tolerance understanding Instrument handling accuracy Manhole cover / ductile iron product exposure Independence in rejecting, holding, or escalating doubtful material
3. CORE COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
A. Visual Defect Identification Candidate must demonstrate ability to identify: Blow holes / pin holes / porosity Sand inclusion, slag, scabs, rough surface, and burn-on sand Cracks, shrinkage, cold shut, misrun, and broken corners / lugs Mould mismatch, fins, flash, uneven seating, warpage, and distortion Painting, finishing, grinding, and fettling-related defects
B. Quality Inspection Ability Must be able to: Check critical dimensions against drawing or customer specification of samples & running castings Understand tolerances, minimum / maximum limits, and acceptance criteria Use Vernier caliper, micrometer, height gauge, measuring tape, gauges, templates, and surface plate
C. Drawing & Specification Understanding Must be able to: Read basic mechanical drawings and inspection sketches Identify critical-to-fit dimensions such as seating, clear opening, frame size, cover size, and matching surfaces Understand customer markings, grade markings, batch identification, and dispatch requirements Follow IS / EN / customer-specific requirements wherever applicable
D. Defect Judgement & Segregation Must be comfortable: Classifying material as OK, rework, hold, or reject Separating non-conforming castings physically and clearly Escalating repeated defects instead of silently passing material Balancing quality control with practical foundry realities Follow quality standards & guidelines set by Director / Management
E. Documentation & Reporting Must maintain: Daily inspection reports Defect / rejection records Rework clearance records Photographic evidence for recurring or serious defects Basic trend reporting to Quality Head / Production team Knows the science of CAPA, Root Cause Analysis (RLF. Shop-Floor Coordination Must be comfortable: Speaking with moulding, melting, fettling, machining, painting, and dispatch teams Holding material when required despite production or any senior pressure (Very Important) Following escalation channels when quality risk is high Labour handling wherever required G. Safety & Factory Discipline Must follow: PPE discipline in foundry and finishing areas Safe handling of heavy castings and inspection tools Housekeeping around inspected / rejected material areas Shift timing, attendance, and reporting discipline
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
Work Location: In person
