PRINCIPAL ENGINEER /TECHNICAL LEAD

Svitla Systems Inc. is looking for a Principal Engineer/Technical Lead for a full-time position (40 hours per week) in LATAM . Our client is a developer of a planning platform that links prospective community college students with universities.

You'll lead the design and delivery of a modern, integration-driven SaaS platform. This role is ideal for a hands-on technical leader who thrives in complex environments involving third-party integrations, scalable backend systems, and cross-functional collaboration. The engagement involves building and extending a centralized Integration Hub that connects to multiple enterprise systems, as well as developing a React-based platform interface that enables internal teams to manage integrations and onboarding workflows. It is not a pure management role. It is a deep technical leadership position requiring strong architectural thinking, hands-on coding, and the ability to guide a small team toward high-quality, production-ready outcomes. You will be expected to work across this full stack, with a primary focus on backend architecture and integrations

THE PLATFORM IS BUILT ON A MODERN FULL-STACK ARCHITECTURE, INCLUDING:

Backend: Node.js, NestJS (TypeScript);
Frontend: React (TypeScript);
Databases: MongoDB and PostgreSQL;
Cloud: Google Cloud Platform (GCP);
Integration Layer: Custom-built Integration Hub using a connector interface pattern;
Integration Methods: REST APIs, SFTP, event/data-driven workflows.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum of 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on backend systems.
Minimum of a Bachelor's in Computer Science, Master's preferred.
Advanced knowledge of Node.js and TypeScript, including experience with frameworks such as NestJS.
Proven experience designing and building scalable, modular backend architectures.
Strong knowledge of third-party integrations, including REST APIs, file-based integrations (SFTP), and data transformation pipelines.
Experience working with both relational and NoSQL databases, particularly PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
Understanding of building or contributing to multi-tenant SaaS platforms
Strong understanding of system design, performance, and reliability considerations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and interact directly with stakeholders.
Architectural thinking.
Hands-on coding skills.
Leadership and mentorship skills.

NICE TO HAVE:

Experience working with enterprise systems such as SIS, ERP, or CRM platforms (e.g., Workday, PeopleSoft, Banner).
Experience with event-driven architectures or messaging systems.
Familiarity with GCP services and cloud-native deployment models.
Experience building internal tooling platforms or operational dashboards.
Prior experience in a client-facing consulting or outsourcing environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as the technical owner of one or more workstreams, responsible for both execution and quality.
Lead the design and implementation of backend services using Node.js and NestJS, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and alignment with a modular, connector-based architecture.
Work extensively in TypeScript, enforcing strong typing and shared contracts across systems.
Architect and oversee the development of integration connectors to enterprise systems such as Student Information Systems (SIS) and CRM platforms. These integrations will span REST APIs, SFTP-based data exchange, and hybrid models, requiring thoughtful handling of data transformation, error scenarios, and edge cases.
Collaborate closely with client-side engineering teams, participating in design reviews, producing detailed technical documentation, and ensuring alignment with architectural standards and governance processes.
Guide and mentor a small team of engineers, providing direction, reviewing code, and ensuring consistent delivery velocity without compromising quality.
Contribute to frontend architecture and implementation as needed, working with React (TypeScript) to build internal tools and configuration interfaces that support onboarding and operational workflows.
