As a Lab and Data Center Engineer, you will own the physical and virtual infrastructure underpinning our internal lab and test environments. You will administer hypervisor platforms, drive automation for provisioning and compliance, and maintain the hardware lifecycle that keeps our engineering teams productive. We follow an infrastructure-as-code model: manual processes are targets for automation, change is tracked in version control, and every system operates within documented compliance boundaries. You will partner closely with engineering, security, and IT teams to onboard workloads, plan capacity, and continuously raise the reliability and efficiency of our lab infrastructure.
- Administer and maintain hypervisor deployments — VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, NSX), KVM, and Proxmox — across lab and test environments, ensuring high availability and consistent configuration standards.
- Design and execute infrastructure automation pipelines to provision, patch, and maintain compliance of virtualization platforms using Ansible, Terraform, PowerCLI, Python, and/or Bash; enforce change through version-controlled workflows.
- Manage server operating systems (Windows Server, RHEL, Ubuntu) across the fleet, including patch cycles, configuration baselines, and security hardening aligned to SOC 2 requirements.
- Implement and maintain security controls and audit-ready documentation that support SOC 2 compliance; serve as a technical liaison to security and compliance teams during assessments.
- Perform physical hardware installations: rack and stack servers and networking gear, execute structured cabling and cable management, and maintain data center physical standards.
- Execute hardware lifecycle tasks — server, storage, and network replacements, RMA processing, and firmware/driver updates — with minimal disruption to lab operations.
- Maintain data center operations awareness: monitor power and cooling systems, track capacity utilization, manage rack space inventory, and enforce equipment labeling and documentation standards.
- Build and sustain asset inventory, runbooks, change records, and operational documentation; participate in on-call rotation and contribute to incident response and root cause analysis.
- Collaborate with engineering, security, and IT teams to plan lab capacity, define infrastructure standards, and onboard new workloads or hardware platforms.
- Evaluate emerging hardware and software technologies — including GPU infrastructure, high-density cooling, and new hypervisor capabilities — to improve lab reliability, efficiency, and automation coverage.
- 1+ years of experience with Cloud Platforms, including AWS.
- 4–6+ years of experience in data center operations, lab infrastructure, or systems engineering.
- 3+ years of hands-on VMware vSphere administration, including ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and NSX.
- 3+ years of scripting and automation experience using PowerShell/PowerCLI, Python, Bash, or Ansible.
- 2+ years of experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
- Experience managing Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu) and Windows Server environments, including patch management and security configuration baselines.
- Demonstrated experience with physical data center operations: rack and stack, structured cabling, power and cooling systems awareness, and end-to-end hardware lifecycle management.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (switching, routing, VLANs, firewalls) and familiarity with security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2.
- Experience maintaining asset inventory, change management records, and operational runbooks.
- CS/IT degree or equivalent experience.
Preferred:
- 3+ years of experience with Cloud Platforms, including AWS.
- VMware VCP-DCV or higher; CCNA or CCNP Data Center; CompTIA A+ or equivalent certification.
- Experience with KVM or Proxmox hypervisors in addition to VMware.
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and hybrid cloud/on-premises integration patterns.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based version control applied to infrastructure automation.
- Familiarity with ITSM tools (ServiceNow, Jira) and ITIL-aligned change management processes.
- Experience supporting AI/ML workloads, GPU-accelerated servers, or high-density compute environments.
- Knowledge of direct liquid cooling (DLC) or hybrid air/liquid cooling systems.
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or equivalent) for health, capacity, and alerting.
