1. POSITION PURPOSE
We are looking for an experienced Head – Electrical Engineering to lead the electrical engineering function for material handling and bulk material handling projects.
The incumbent will be responsible for providing technical leadership and end-to-end ownership of electrical engineering, covering design, engineering deliverables, equipment selection, vendor coordination, customer approvals, project execution, site support, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
The ideal candidate should preferably have strong experience in conveyor systems and material handling projects, along with sound knowledge of motors, VFDs, MCCs, PCCs, transformers, HT/LT systems, instrumentation interfaces, PLC/DCS integration and industrial electrical installations.
The position requires a hands-on leader capable of managing a team while personally driving critical engineering issues to closure.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP
- Lead the complete Electrical Engineering team and establish engineering priorities.
- Review and approve electrical engineering philosophy and design basis.
- Allocate engineering responsibilities and monitor deliverables.
- Ensure timely submission and approval of drawings and documents.
- Establish engineering standards, templates, checklists and design practices.
- Mentor and develop electrical engineers and designers.
- Ensure engineering quality and minimise design errors and rework.
B. MATERIAL HANDLING / CONVEYOR ENGINEERING
The candidate should preferably have practical knowledge of electrical systems associated with:
- Belt conveyors.
- Apron feeders.
- Belt feeders.
- Bucket elevators.
- Crushers.
- Screens.
- Stacker/reclaimers.
- Travelling equipment.
- Magnetic separators.
- Conveyor auxiliaries.
- Dust extraction systems.
- Material handling equipment.
Particular emphasis should be placed on understanding the electrical requirements of long-distance, inclined and multiple-drive conveyors.
C. MOTORS & DRIVES
Strong knowledge of:
- LT motors.
- HT motors, particularly 3.3 kV / 6.6 kV motors.
- DOL starters.
- Soft starters.
- VFDs.
- VFD-duty motors.
- Motor protection.
- Motor starting calculations.
- Starting current and voltage-drop calculations.
- Regenerative and braking applications.
- Variable-speed conveyor applications.
- Motor selection and sizing.
The candidate should be capable of independently reviewing whether a proposed motor/VFD combination is technically suitable for the application.
D. MCC / PCC / VFD PANELS
Experience in engineering and reviewing:
- MCCs.
- PCCs.
- VFD panels.
- Soft-starter panels.
- Motor control panels.
- Local control stations.
- Control desks.
- PLC panels.
- Marshalling panels.
- Junction boxes.
The candidate should be capable of reviewing:
- SLDs.
- Control schematics.
- GA drawings.
- Cable schedules.
- Terminal plans.
- I/O lists.
- BOMs.
- Interlocking schemes.
- Protection schemes.
E. HT / LT ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
Working knowledge of:
- HT switchgear.
- LT switchgear.
- Transformers.
- Dry-type transformers.
- Booster transformers.
- HT/LT distribution systems.
- Cable sizing.
- Busbar sizing.
- Short-circuit calculations.
- Voltage-drop calculations.
- Protection coordination.
- Earthing systems.
- Lightning protection.

Experience with 6.6 kV systems will be strongly preferred.
3. CONVEYOR CONTROL & SAFETY SYSTEMS
The candidate should understand the electrical/control philosophy associated with conveyor safety devices including:
- Pull-cord switches.
- Belt sway switches.
- Zero-speed switches.
- Belt rip/rupture switches.
- Chute jam detectors.
- Plug switches.
- Emergency stop systems.
- Anti-runback systems.
- Belt slip protection.
- Conveyor start/stop sequencing.
- Interlocking between upstream/downstream conveyors.
- Pre-start warning systems.
- Local/remote operation.
A good candidate should be able to understand the complete conveyor protection philosophy, rather than looking at individual devices in isolation.
4. PLC / DCS / SCADA INTERFACE
Working knowledge of:
- PLC-based conveyor control.
- DCS interface.
- SCADA.
- Remote I/O.
- Digital and analogue I/O.
- Communication networks.
- Modbus.
- Profibus / Profinet.
- Ethernet/IP where applicable.
- Hardwired interlocks.
- Emergency shutdown systems.
The candidate need not necessarily be a PLC programmer, but must be capable of understanding, reviewing and approving the control philosophy and interface requirements.
5. ENGINEERING DOCUMENTATION
The candidate shall be responsible for ensuring timely and technically correct preparation/review of:
- Electrical Design Basis.
- Load list.
- Motor list.
- SLDs.
- Cable schedules.
- Cable sizing calculations.
- Voltage-drop calculations.
- Short-circuit calculations.
- Transformer sizing.
- MCC/PCC sizing.
- VFD sizing.
- Electrical equipment specifications.
- Earthing calculations.
- Lighting calculations.
- Illumination layouts.
- Electrical equipment layouts.
- Cable tray layouts.
- Control schematics.
- Interlocking diagrams.
- I/O lists.

6. CUSTOMER / CONSULTANT INTERFACE
The incumbent will be expected to independently interact with:
- Customers.
- Consultants.
- EPC contractors.
- Utility representatives.
- Inspection agencies.
- Electrical equipment vendors.
Responsibilities include:
- Technical discussions.
- Clarification meetings.
- Drawing/document approval.
- Resolution of customer comments.
- Technical deviation evaluation.
- Vendor approval.
- FAT participation.
- Site technical discussions.
- Commissioning-related discussions.
Experience dealing with NTPC / BHEL / major EPC consultants / power-sector customers will be an advantage.
7. SITE & COMMISSIONING EXPERIENCE
This is a critical selection criterion.
The candidate should have substantial practical exposure to:
- Site installation.
- Cable laying.
- Termination.
- Electrical testing.
- Motor testing.
- Transformer commissioning.
- MCC/PCC commissioning.
- VFD commissioning.
- PLC/control interface.
- Loop checking.
- Interlock testing.
- Conveyor trial runs.
- No-load and load trials.
- Troubleshooting.
The candidate must be comfortable visiting sites and resolving engineering issues personally when required.
8. VENDOR MANAGEMENT
- Prepare technical specifications and RFQs.
- Evaluate vendor offers technically.
- Prepare technical comparative statements.
- Conduct technical discussions with vendors.
- Review vendor drawings and documents.
- Coordinate inspections.
- Review FAT procedures and reports.
- Resolve vendor technical deviations.
- Ensure compliance with approved specifications.
9. TEAM MANAGEMENT
The successful candidate will lead the Electrical Engineering team and shall:
- Define individual responsibilities.
- Establish engineering schedules.
- Monitor progress against project milestones.
- Review team performance.
- Identify resource gaps.
- Train and mentor engineers.
- Develop technically independent engineers.
- Ensure proper document control.
- Prevent engineering delays from affecting procurement and project execution.
The candidate should demonstrate the ability to lead through influence as well as authority.
10. INTER-DEPARTMENTAL COORDINATION
Close coordination will be required with:
- Mechanical Engineering.
- Instrumentation & Controls.

- Production / Manufacturing.

- Site / Commissioning.

The Electrical Head must understand the impact of engineering decisions on procurement, manufacturing, cost, schedule and commissioning.
11. SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
The candidate should have sound understanding of:
- Electrical safety.
- Earthing.
- Electrical isolation.
- LOTO.
- Short-circuit protection.
- Motor protection.
- Emergency shutdown.
- Arc-flash considerations.
- Applicable IS/IEC standards.
- Customer-specific electrical standards.
12. REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
Essential:
- B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering.
- 10 - 15+ years of relevant experience.
- Strong industrial electrical engineering background.
- Experience in project-based engineering.
Preferred:
- Experience in Bulk Material Handling / Material Handling.
- Experience with conveyor systems.
- Experience with power plants, cement, steel, mining or similar process industries.
- Exposure to HT systems, particularly 6.6 kV.
- Experience leading an electrical engineering team.
13. IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
The ideal candidate would preferably have progressed through a career such as:
Electrical Engineer → Senior Electrical Engineer → Project/Lead Engineer → Engineering Manager → Head – Electrical Engineering
with substantial exposure to material handling/conveyor projects.
Candidates who have worked predominantly in residential, commercial buildings, facilities management or purely maintenance roles are considered a priority, even if they have substantial years of experience.
