Full job description

Quality Manager Roles and Responsibilities1. Quality Management System (QMS)

Develop, implement, and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).
Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 requirements.
Maintain documented procedures, work instructions, and quality records.
Lead internal and external quality audits.
Coordinate certification and surveillance audits.

2. Incoming Material Quality Control

Approve suppliers based on quality performance.
Inspect incoming materials such as:
Tinplate
Tin-free steel (TFS)
Aluminum sheets
Coatings, lacquers, and varnishes
Printing inks
Solvents and chemicals
Verify Certificates of Analysis (COA).
Manage supplier quality issues and corrective actions.

3. Process Quality ControlMetal Sheet Inspection

Thickness measurement
Hardness testing
Surface defect inspection
Coating weight verification

Coating Process

Monitor coating thickness
Check curing parameters
Adhesion testing
Gloss measurement
Color consistency
Solvent resistance

Printing Process

Color matching
Registration accuracy
Dot gain control
Ink adhesion
Scratch resistance
Visual appearance inspection

4. Finished Product Quality Assurance

Inspect products for:

Dimensions
Appearance
Print quality
Coating integrity
Scratch resistance
Corrosion resistance
Food-contact compliance (where applicable)
Packaging quality
Label correctness

Release finished products only after meeting specifications.

5. Laboratory Management

Manage quality laboratory activities including:

Cross-hatch adhesion tests
Pencil hardness tests
MEK rub tests
Salt spray tests
Humidity testing
Gloss testing
Color measurement using spectrophotometers
Film thickness measurements
Impact resistance tests

Ensure calibration of all laboratory equipment.

6. Customer Complaint Management

Investigate customer complaints.
Conduct root cause analysis.
Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Prepare detailed investigation reports.
Monitor complaint trends.
Improve customer satisfaction.

7. Non-Conformance Management

Identify defective products.
Segregate non-conforming material.
Decide on rework, downgrade, or scrap.
Monitor recurring defects.
Reduce rejection rates.

8. Root Cause Analysis

Lead investigations using quality tools such as:

5 Why Analysis
Fishbone (Cause-and-Effect) Diagram
Pareto Analysis
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Statistical Process Control (SPC)

9. Continuous Improvement

Reduce defects and waste.
Improve process capability.
Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Lead improvement projects.
Support Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives.

Typical KPIs include:

First Pass Yield (FPY)
Customer complaints
Internal rejection rate
Supplier defects
Cost of poor quality
On-time corrective action closure

10. Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including:

Food packaging regulations (where applicable)
Environmental regulations
Occupational health and safety requirements
Customer-specific standards

11. Audit Management

Plan and conduct:

Internal quality audits
Supplier audits
Process audits
Product audits
Customer audits

Ensure timely closure of audit findings.

12. Team Leadership

Lead QA/QC engineers and inspectors.
Assign inspection responsibilities.
Train employees on quality standards and inspection methods.
Conduct performance reviews.
Build a quality-focused culture.

13. Documentation Control

Maintain:

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Inspection plans
Control plans
Calibration records
Test reports
CAPA records
Audit reports
Quality manuals

14. Risk Management

Identify quality risks.
Implement preventive measures.
Review process changes before implementation.
Conduct risk assessments for new products and processes.

15. Production Support

Control viscosity.
Monitor oven temperature profiles.
Verify cure schedules.
Check coating thickness and coverage.
Prevent coating defects such as pinholes, blistering, orange peel, and poor adhesion.
