Job Description – Dialysis Technician

Department: Dialysis Unit
Reports To: Dialysis In-Charge

1. Job Summary

The Dialysis Technician is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and quality technical support during hemodialysis procedures. The role includes preparing and operating dialysis machines, maintaining equipment, assisting the clinical team, ensuring infection prevention practices, and monitoring the dialysis environment in accordance with hospital policies and applicable standards.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Dialysis Procedure & Technical Responsibilities

Prepare and check dialysis machines, dialysis chairs/beds, and required equipment before each session.
Perform machine preparation, priming, disinfection, and safety checks as per protocol.
Set up the extracorporeal blood circuit and dialysis consumables correctly.
Assist the nursing and medical team during initiation, monitoring, and termination of dialysis.
Monitor dialysis machine parameters and immediately report abnormalities.
Identify and respond appropriately to machine alarms and technical problems.
Ensure proper disposal and replacement of dialysis consumables after each session.
Assist in emergency situations occurring during dialysis as directed by the clinical team.

B. Patient Care Support

Receive and prepare patients for dialysis in coordination with nursing staff.
Verify patient identification and dialysis prescription before starting the procedure.
Monitor the patient's general condition during dialysis and promptly report any abnormal signs or symptoms.
Maintain patient comfort, privacy, dignity, and safety throughout the procedure.
Record relevant treatment parameters and observations accurately.

C. Infection Prevention & Control

Strictly follow hospital infection control policies and dialysis-specific precautions.
Maintain proper hand hygiene and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ensure appropriate cleaning and disinfection of dialysis machines and surrounding areas.
Follow protocols for prevention of blood-borne infections.
Handle biomedical waste according to hospital policy and applicable regulations.
Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic dialysis unit.

D. Equipment & Inventory Management

Ensure dialysis machines and associated equipment are functioning properly.
Report equipment malfunction, breakdown, or maintenance requirements immediately.
Assist with routine maintenance and calibration activities as required.
Check availability of dialysis consumables, disinfectants, and emergency supplies.
Maintain proper storage and handling of dialysis-related materials.
Support inventory monitoring and prevent unnecessary wastage.

E. Documentation & Records

Maintain accurate dialysis treatment records and machine-related documentation.
Record pre-, intra-, and post-dialysis parameters as required.
Maintain equipment cleaning and disinfection records.
Complete checklists and other departmental documentation accurately and on time.
Ensure all records are maintained according to hospital and NABH requirements.

F. Safety & Quality Responsibilities

Follow hospital policies, SOPs, and dialysis unit protocols.
Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Report incidents, near misses, and equipment-related concerns promptly.
Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and supplies.
Participate in departmental audits and NABH-related activities.
Attend mandatory training and competency assessments.

3. Qualifications

Diploma / B.Sc. in Dialysis Technology or equivalent recognized qualification.
Valid registration/certification, if applicable, as per applicable requirements.
Additional training in dialysis technology and infection control will be an advantage.

4. Experience

Freshers may be considered, depending on hospital requirements.
Previous experience in a hospital dialysis unit is preferred.
Experience with hemodialysis machines and dialysis unit procedures will be an advantage.

5. Required Skills & Competencies

Good technical knowledge of hemodialysis procedures and equipment.
Knowledge of infection prevention and biomedical waste management.
Ability to identify machine alarms and technical issues.
Good patient-handling and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
Attention to detail and accurate documentation.
Willingness to work in shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required.

Timely reporting of equipment issues and patient-related concerns.
