Full job description

Job Summary

The Nursing Superintendent is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and supervising all nursing services in the hospital. The role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered nursing care while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, infection control protocols, and regulatory requirements. The Nursing Superintendent leads the nursing team, promotes continuous quality improvement, and collaborates with multidisciplinary departments to ensure efficient hospital operations.

Key Responsibilities

Nursing Administration

Plan, organize, and supervise all nursing services across the hospital.
Develop and implement nursing policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
Ensure safe, ethical, and evidence-based nursing practices.
Maintain adequate nursing staffing levels and prepare duty rosters.
Monitor nursing performance and ensure quality patient care.

Patient Care Management

Ensure high standards of patient safety and nursing care.
Monitor patient satisfaction and address concerns promptly.
Coordinate with consultants, physicians, therapists, and allied healthcare professionals.
Supervise nursing care in orthopedic, surgical, medical, ICU, emergency, operation theatre, labor room (if applicable), and other specialty units.

Quality & Accreditation

Ensure compliance with NABH, JCI (if applicable), and statutory regulations.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
Monitor nursing quality indicators and implement corrective actions.
Maintain documentation standards and nursing records.

Infection Prevention & Patient Safety

Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control protocols.
Conduct regular infection control surveillance with the Infection Control Team.
Promote medication safety and patient safety initiatives.
Ensure compliance with biomedical waste management guidelines.

Human Resource Management

Recruit, orient, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff.
Conduct performance appraisals and competency assessments.
Identify training needs and organize continuing nursing education (CNE) programs.
Foster teamwork, discipline, and professional development.

Clinical Operations

Coordinate smooth functioning of inpatient wards, ICU, OT, emergency, and outpatient nursing services.
Ensure availability of nursing equipment, supplies, and consumables.
Participate in disaster management and emergency preparedness activities.
Coordinate bed management and patient flow.

Documentation & Reporting

Maintain nursing statistics and departmental reports.
Monitor incident reporting and ensure timely investigations.
Prepare monthly reports on staffing, quality indicators, training, and patient outcomes.
Ensure compliance with statutory documentation requirements.

Financial & Resource Management

Monitor nursing department budgets and optimize resource utilization.
Minimize wastage of medical supplies and equipment.
Coordinate procurement of nursing equipment and consumables.

Qualifications

B.Sc. Nursing (Mandatory)
M.Sc. Nursing (Preferred)
Valid Nursing Council registration.
Certification in Nursing Administration, Quality Management, Infection Control, or Critical Care is an added advantage.

Experience

10–15 years of clinical nursing experience.
Minimum 5 years in a leadership or nursing administration role.
Experience in orthopedic and multispecialty hospital operations preferred.
Experience with NABH/JCI accreditation processes is desirable.
