About the Role
This role is suited to an engineer who enjoys building device-side software on Linux-based edge devices and deploying solutions that operate reliably in real-world, mission-critical environments. You will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining applications and services written primarily in C and C++, supported by Python and shell scripting, on Linux and embedded Linux platforms.
You will integrate our product range with Linux networking stacks, video recording and streaming solutions, Bluetooth services, third-party SDKs, security and AI libraries, and hardware peripherals including TPMs, GNSS/GPS receivers, GPIO interfaces, and cellular connectivity modules (4G/5G).
The systems you build will be deployed at scale and must meet the expectations of public-sector customers, most notably law-enforcement organizations, where reliability, security, and data integrity are paramount.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain device-side applications and services in C and C++, supported by Python and shell scripting, on Linux and embedded Linux platforms.
- Integrate products with Linux networking stacks, video recording and streaming solutions, Bluetooth services, and third-party SDKs.
- Work with security and AI libraries and hardware peripherals, including TPMs, GNSS/GPS receivers, GPIO interfaces, and 4G/5G cellular connectivity modules.
- Own work across the full software development lifecycle – requirements definition, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support.
- Collaborate closely with backend, platform, and QA engineers on configuration, installation scripts, logging, and provisioning.
- Support customer support and diagnostics activities, including evidence handling for public-sector and law-enforcement deployments.
- Build robust, maintainable solutions suitable for safety-critical, compliance-driven, and security-sensitive environments.
- Contribute to fleet-scale device management practices across large numbers of connected devices in the field.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong foundation in Linux-based systems development, with solid multithreading expertise.
- Experience with web backend integration.
- Basic knowledge of HTTP servers, databases, and SQL queries.
- Experience deploying AI models for video, audio, or sensor processing on edge or embedded platforms.
- Knowledge of embedded and device security, including secure boot, certificate management, hardware-backed key storage (TPM), and encrypted communications.
- Experience working on large-scale connected device fleets.
- Familiarity with Linux networking internals and performance optimization.
- Familiarity with video compression standards and developing applications using multimedia platforms such as GStreamer SDK and FFmpeg.
- Experience with IP-based physical security product integration standards such as ONVIF.
- Knowledge of common network architectures (routers, switches, proxies, etc.).
- Excellent troubleshooting skills using network analysis tools.
- Demonstrable ability to plan and manage own timelines and deliver applications on time and in line with business needs.
- Experience configuring, optimizing, and developing media streaming servers.
- Excellent presentation, communication, and documentation skills, together with the relevant tertiary qualifications.
- A solid understanding of video solutions and secure, networked edge devices.
Desirable (Not Essential)
- Prior experience in embedded Linux, AI, or evidence-management domains.
- Exposure to safety-critical or compliance-driven product environments, such as public sector or law enforcement technology.
What We're Looking For
More important than domain-specific experience is a strong foundation in Linux-based systems development, multithreading expertise, an understanding of video solutions, secure and networked edge devices, and the ability to deliver robust, maintainable solutions for safety-critical and compliance-driven environments. We are looking for someone who can work independently, manage their own timelines, and communicate clearly with cross-functional teams and, where required, customers.
Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
- C++: 5 years (Required)
- Embedded Linux: 4 years (Required)
- Python scripting: 5 years (Required)
- ONVIF: 4 years (Required)
- AI/ML model integration (edge): 2 years (Required)
- Public sector / law enforcement software: 3 years (Preferred)
- Linux networking (TCP/IP): 4 years (Required)
