Senior Staff Nurse – Pediatric Hemato Oncology Ward & Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health

Department: Pediatric Hemato Oncology & BMTU
Reporting To: Professor of Pediatrics & Pediatric Hemato-Oncologist
Location: Pediatric Hemato Oncology Ward & Bone Marrow Transplant Unit
Employment Type: Contractual- initially for 12 months. Extended based on performance

Position Summary

The Senior Staff Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to pediatric patients undergoing treatment for hematological disorders, cancers, and bone marrow transplantation. The role involves comprehensive patient care, infection control, chemotherapy administration, monitoring critically ill pediatric patients, family counseling, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and mentoring junior nursing staff while ensuring adherence to hospital protocols and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

Deliver comprehensive nursing care to pediatric hemato-oncology and BMT patients.
Administer chemotherapy, blood products, IV medications, antibiotics, immunotherapy, and supportive care as per protocols.
Monitor patients for chemotherapy-related complications, transfusion reactions, sepsis, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and emergencies.
Provide pre- and post-transplant nursing care including conditioning regimen monitoring.
Assess and document vital signs, intake-output, pain scores, and clinical status accurately.
Maintain central venous catheters (PICC lines, Hickman lines, chemo ports) as per aseptic protocols.
Assist in emergency management including febrile neutropenia, anaphylaxis, respiratory distress, and code blue situations.
Ensure strict adherence to pediatric medication safety standards.

Infection Prevention & BMTU Care

Maintain strict infection control and isolation protocols within the BMT unit.
Ensure compliance with hand hygiene, PPE use, sterile procedures, and environmental safety standards.
Educate patients and caregivers regarding neutropenic precautions and post-transplant care.
Participate in infection surveillance and quality improvement initiatives.

Patient & Family Support

Provide emotional support and counseling to children and caregivers during treatment.
Educate families regarding chemotherapy care, nutrition, hygiene, medication adherence, and discharge planning.
Facilitate continuity of care and coordinate referrals when required.

Coordination & Documentation

Coordinate with consultants, residents, dieticians, blood bank, laboratory, and pharmacy teams.
Maintain accurate nursing documentation, medication records, and transplant-related charts.
Ensure compliance with institutional quality standards.
Participate in ward rounds, clinical meetings, audits, and mortality/morbidity reviews.

Leadership & Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise and mentor junior nurses and nursing assistants.
Assist in staff scheduling, orientation, and competency training.
Ensure adequate availability of emergency drugs, consumables, and equipment.
Support implementation of nursing protocols and clinical pathways.

Educational Qualification

B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
Registered Nurse certification.
Post-basic specialization or certification in Oncology Nursing/BMT Nursing preferred.

Experience

Minimum 4–6 years of nursing experience.
At least 2–3 years of experience in Pediatric Hemato Oncology and/or Bone Marrow Transplant Unit preferred.
Experience in chemotherapy administration and pediatric critical care desirable.

Knowledge of pediatric oncology and transplant protocols.
Competency in chemotherapy handling and administration.
Strong infection control practices.
Pediatric IV access and central line management skills.
Effective communication and counseling abilities.
Emergency response and critical thinking skills.

Working Conditions

Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Exposure to immunocompromised and critically ill pediatric patients.
Requirement to follow strict infection control and occupational safety practices.
