What You'll Do:
Avalara is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead distributed engineering teams building scalable, cloud-native software as a service solutions that help simplify tax compliance for customers. You will guide multiple Scrum teams across geographies, improve engineering execution, and help deliver secure, reliable, high-performance systems. You will partner with Product, User Experience, Architecture, and other engineering leaders to align technical work with customer and business priorities. You will also help grow engineering talent and raise the team’s use of artificial intelligence in practical, measurable ways across coding, testing, operations, and delivery. This role reports to the Director of Engineering. #LI-Remote
What Your Responsibilities Will Be:
- Lead and develop distributed engineering teams delivering scalable software as a service solutions.

Drive predictable, high-quality execution across multiple Scrum teams.

Support architecture decisions that improve scalability, performance, security, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Strengthen continuous integration, continuous delivery, automation, and DevOps practices.

Serve as an escalation point for production and customer-impacting issues.

Partner with Product, User Experience, Architecture, and other stakeholders to align technical work with priorities.

Hire, coach, and develop engineers while building strong engineering practices.

Use metrics to guide decisions, improve delivery, and raise team effectiveness.

Strengthen engineering fundamentals across object-oriented design, microservices, application programming interfaces, and secure development.

Lead practical adoption of artificial intelligence-enabled development practices that improve productivity, quality, speed, and engineering outcomes.
What You'll Need to be Successful:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering

10+ years of software development experience delivering large-scale production systems, including 2+ years of engineering management or equivalent leadership experience.

Experience leading distributed engineering teams and growing engineering talent through hiring, coaching, and development.

Experience with front-end and full-stack development using technologies such as React, Angular, TypeScript, Node.js, C#, .NET, REST application programming interfaces, and relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle.

Experience designing scalable microservices architectures using Amazon Web Services or another major cloud provider, with strong knowledge of performance, security, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Applied experience using artificial intelligence to improve engineering outcomes across areas such as coding, testing, operations, automation, quality, delivery speed, scale, or cost efficiency.

This role is expected to raise and continuously advance Avalara's AI engineering capability. The manager must demonstrate deep, hands-on experience applying AI across coding, testing, operations, and engineering workflows to drive measurable improvements in productivity, quality, and delivery speed. This leader will introduce new AI tools, establish best practices, and operationalize AI-driven development, ensuring the team moves beyond basic usage toward meaningful innovation and automation. Success requires actively leveling up the AI capability of the engineering organization, mentoring engineers on applied AI techniques, and identifying strategic opportunities where AI can materially improve engineering outcomes and business impact.
