Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and technically accomplished Senior Design Engineer to lead the design and engineering of large-scale Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems and Extra High Voltage (EHV) power infrastructure at 33kV and above. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both renewable energy and transmission/substation engineering, with the ability to independently manage complex projects from concept through to commissioning.
Key Responsibilities:
▸ Lead the end-to-end design of utility-scale and commercial solar PV projects (rooftop, ground-mounted, and floating PV).
▸ Perform solar resource assessment, energy yield analysis, and system sizing using tools such as PVsyst, HelioScope, or Homer Pro.
▸ Design DC and AC collection systems, inverter selection and string configuration, MV collector networks, and grid connection schemes.
▸ Prepare and review all design deliverables: SLDs, layout drawings, cable sizing, protection coordination, and equipment specifications.
▸ Evaluate and specify solar panels, inverters, trackers, transformers, switchgear, and balance-of-plant (BOP) components.
EHV Power Systems Design (33kV and Above)
▸ Design EHV substations at voltage levels of 33kV, 66kV, 132kV, 220kV, and 400kV including AIS and GIS configurations.
▸ Develop Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), substation layouts, equipment specifications, and protection & control philosophies.
▸ Conduct power system studies including load flow, short circuit / fault level, protection relay coordination, and harmonic analysis using ETAP, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or equivalent software.
▸ Prepare earthing / grounding system designs in accordance with IEEE 80 / BS 7430 / EN 50522 standards.
▸ Specify and review protection relay settings for distance, differential, overcurrent, and earth fault protection schemes.
▸ Ensure grid code compliance and manage technical interface with transmission / distribution system operators (TSO/DSO).
Project & Stakeholder Management
▸ Lead multidisciplinary design teams and coordinate with civil, structural, SCADA, and telecoms engineers.
▸ Manage engineering deliverables schedule, quality control, and document control in compliance with ISO 9001 processes.
▸ Review and approve contractor design submittals, inspection and test plans (ITPs), and method statements.
▸ Interface with client, utility authorities, regulatory bodies, and third-party consultants throughout project lifecycle.
▸ Support procurement by preparing technical specifications, evaluating vendor bids, and participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
▸ Provide site support during construction, commissioning, and energization phases as required.
Required Qualification:
▸ Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university (Power Systems specialization preferred).
▸ Professional licensure or chartership is highly advantageous: PE (NCEES), CEng (IET/IMechE), or equivalent recognized body.
▸ NABCEP PV System Design Professional certification is a strong plus.
Experience Required:
▸ Minimum 10 years of post-qualification experience in electrical power systems design.
▸ At least 5 years of hands-on experience specifically in Solar PV system design (utility-scale projects preferred).
▸Proven experience in EHV substation and transmission line design at 33kV and above.
▸ Demonstrated ability to independently lead and deliver complex engineering projects from concept to energization.
▸ Experience working with international standards: IEC 61936, IEC 62271, IEEE C37 series, IEC 60909, IEC 61850.
▸ Prior experience in Middle East, South Asia, or African power markets is advantageous.
