AWS Infrastructure Operations (InfraOps) owns the facility and infrastructure operations of all AWS data centers. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of hardware and network engineers, logistics specialists, security and safety experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
We are looking for a detail-oriented, technically skilled Rack Lifecycle Tech to join our Rack Lifecycle Team within AWS Infrastructure Operations. In this individual contributor role, you will be a hands-on executor responsible for the physical installation, cabling, handoff, and decommissioning of racks across your assigned data center site. You are the person on the floor who turns capacity plans into operational reality.
As an Rack Lifecycle Tech, you will execute structured cabling, rack installation, and decommission activities with precision and to standard — following established SOPs, escalating deviations to your team lead, and ensuring every rack you touch is installed correctly, cabled to specification, fully documented, and handed off with zero blockers, prepare SOP’s with new processes, stake holder management with cross functional teams. This is an individual contributor role with no people management responsibilities.
Key job responsibilities
Rack Installation & Cabling
- Execute rack installations including physical placement, power connections, grounding, and cable management per AWS standards and MOPs
- Perform structured cabling including fiber/copper terminations, patch panel connections, labeling, and dressing to specification
- Complete OTDR and power testing; validate results against acceptance thresholds; escalate failures to team lead promptly rather than self-resolving outside approved procedures
- Follow all EHS protocols, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and safe work practices during installation activities
Rack Lifecycle Operations
- Execute work orders and tasks assigned by the Rack Lifecycle Team Manager under direct manager direction, maintaining accurate status updates in workflow management tools (e.g., Boost, MARS)
- Perform quality checks on completed cabling work including port map verification, label accuracy, and as-built documentation updates in CMDB/DCIM
- Identify and escalate issues, blockers, or deviations from SOPs encountered during task execution to the team lead or manager promptly; do not self-resolve outside approved procedures
- Support deployment wave readiness by participating in pre-work site walks, material staging, and tool preparation
Material Handling & Supply Chain Support
- Receive, verify, and stage incoming rack, cable, optics, and hardware deliveries; validate against BOM and flag discrepancies
- Maintain accurate site inventory records for cables, optics, patch cords, and consumables used during deployments
- Support cycle count activities and assist in identifying inventory shortfalls that may impact deployment timelines
Handover & Documentation
- Complete all required as-built documentation, port maps, test result records, and workflow sign-offs before handoff to Data Center Operations
- Update CMDB/DCIM and IPAM records accurately following rack installation or decommission activities
- Ensure handoffs are clean and fully documented with zero open blockers, enabling smooth transition to the next lifecycle phase
Rack Decommissioning
- Execute physical decommission activities per assigned MOPs — including cable removal, power disconnects, asset de-tagging, and rack extraction
- Perform device wipe and media destruction in compliance with AWS Secure Media Destruction and EHS policies
- Sort, label, and stage recovered assets (optics, cables, PDUs, hardware) for RMA, redeployment, or secure disposal per AWS Reverse Logistics policy
- Update DCIM/CMDB, IPAM, and port maps post-decom to ensure accurate space, power, and circuit records
- Validate that reclaimed U-space, power, and cooling capacity is accurately recorded in the available pool
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to all site-level SOPs, quality standards, and governance frameworks for cabling, installation, and decommission activities
- Complete all required safety training and certifications; participate in regular EHS audits and team safety briefings
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying recurring quality issues, suggesting process improvements, and sharing feedback with the Rack Lifecycle Team Manager
- Use Rack Lifecycle Team tooling (e.g., Boost, MARS, ALM/DCLM) accurately to record work, track assets, and maintain data integrity
Cross-Team Coordination
- Support coordination with DCO, DCEO, Network Engineering, and facilities teams during active deployment or decom activities under manager guidance to ensure smooth execution
- Participate in daily stand-ups and pre-work briefings; communicate clearly on task status, blockers, and schedule adherence
- Provide accurate, timely updates on task completion and flag risks or delays to the team lead immediately
Continuous Learning & Development
- Maintain and develop technical proficiency in structured cabling, fiber optics, rack installation, and data center physical infrastructure
- Complete required certifications and training modules including EHS, LOTO, and any Rack Lifecycle Team-specific technical programs
- Proactively seek feedback from leads and managers to improve personal performance and output quality
- Support the onboarding and training of new team members; share knowledge and best practices with peers to build overall team capability and quality standards
- Stay current on AWS infrastructure tooling, cabling standards, and process updates communicated by the Rack Lifecycle Team
A day in the life
As a Rack Lifecycle Tech, your day is on the data center floor. You might start the morning by reviewing your assigned work orders in Boost, checking in with your team lead on priorities, and staging cables and optics for a rack installation wave. By midday, you could be terminating fiber runs at a patch panel, running OTDR tests to validate loss results against acceptance thresholds, or labeling and dressing a freshly installed rack. In the afternoon, you might be updating CMDB records for completed work orders, de-tagging and staging recovered assets from an EOL decom, or helping onboard a new technician by walking them through the SOP. If you encounter a deviation from the approved MOP, you escalate it to your team lead immediately — you don't improvise. Your role is hands-on, technical, and precise — you execute the work that keeps AWS capacity on track.
