About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Technical Architect to lead the design and implementation of highly scalable, secure, and resilient backend systems for our Gaming & iGaming Units. You will define the technical vision for our gaming and iGaming backend infrastructure — enabling platforms that handle millions of concurrent players, real-time game events, high-frequency wagering transactions, and AI-driven game mechanics.
This is a hands-on leadership role within a fast-paced gaming environment. You will drive architecture decisions for game servers, player data pipelines, and compliance-critical iGaming systems — collaborating across Game Design, QA, DevOps, and Business to balance performance, fairness, regulatory compliance, and player experience at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Database
- Design and own the end-to-end backend architecture for scalable, enterprise-grade gaming and iGaming platforms — including game servers, lobby systems, wallet/payment services, and player management.
- Define and own the backend services that directly power game development teams — including game configuration services (paytable management, volatility settings, bonus mechanics configuration), asset pipeline APIs (serving game assets, animations, and audio at scale via CDN), and game mathematics validation tooling.
- Architect the game engine integration layer — designing backend SDKs and APIs consumed by Unity / PixiJS / HTML5 game clients for game initialisation, state retrieval, event dispatch, and results rendering — ensuring a clean separation between game presentation logic and server-authoritative game state.
- Design multiplayer and social gaming backends — matchmaking services, player lobby systems, tournament engines, leaderboard services, in-game chat, gifting, and virtual economy systems using technologies such as Nakama, Photon, or custom-built server authoritative frameworks.
- Own the game telemetry and analytics pipeline — capturing real-time player behaviour events (spins, bets, feature triggers, session durations) into a data lake or warehouse (ClickHouse, BigQuery, Redshift) to power game performance dashboards, RTP monitoring, and live game analytics for game designers and product teams.
- Collaborate closely with game developers on technology choices and tooling — including game framework selection (Phaser, PixiJS, Three.js for browser-based games; Unity for cross-platform), build tooling (Webpack, Vite), asset compression and CDN delivery strategies, and maintaining developer-friendly local environments that mirror production RGS behaviour.
- Architect and own the RGS core platform — designing game session lifecycle, round management, RNG execution, outcome resolution, bonus logic, audit trails, and compliance-ready architecture for slots, table, and live games.
- Build scalable integration & transaction infrastructure — exposing REST/WebSocket APIs for aggregators and operators, ensuring secure wallet transactions, high concurrency handling, atomic game states, and regulatory-grade reliability.
- Architect iGaming ecosystem integrations — designing backend connectivity with casino aggregators, sportsbook providers, wallet/payment gateways, and operator platforms for seamless game delivery, player transactions, multi-currency support, and real-time data exchange.
- Own sportsbook, wallet & operational backend architecture — building scalable betting engines, odds/data pipelines, bet processing, settlement workflows, risk controls, bonus systems, reporting dashboards, and compliance-ready operator infrastructure.
- Define microservices, event-driven, and distributed system designs for real-time game state management, session handling, and betting engines that are fault-tolerant and highly available.
- Lead architectural reviews, establish coding standards, and enforce best practices across teams.
- Guide teams in building REST APIs, GraphQL APIs, WebSocket and WebRTC-based real-time game communication services, and asynchronous event pipelines using Node.js.
- Design optimised, high-volume database architectures for player profiles, game history, leaderboards, and transaction ledgers — covering relational, NoSQL, in-memory, and time-series stores.
- Define scaling, replication, sharding, caching, and queue management strategies to handle peak gaming traffic, jackpot events, and surge concurrency.
- Tune systems for sub-100ms latency and high throughput — critical for real-time multiplayer, live casino, and sports betting use cases.
Cloud, DevOps & Compliance Infrastructure
- Design and own cloud infrastructure for production gaming environments (AWS / Azure / GCP), including multi-region deployments to meet latency SLAs for geographically distributed player bases.
- Architect CI/CD pipelines for rapid, zero-downtime game patch and feature deployments; containerised game server deployments (Docker + Kubernetes) with auto-scaling for player load spikes; and IaC strategies (Terraform / CloudFormation) across gaming environments.
- Define monitoring, alerting, disaster recovery, and backup strategies — ensuring high availability for 24/7 gaming operations and meeting regulatory uptime requirements.
- Optimise infrastructure for security, cost efficiency, and scalability — with a focus on PCI-DSS, GDPR, and jurisdictional iGaming compliance where required.
Technical Leadership
- Mentor backend and game server engineers, lead architecture discussions, and drive sprint planning aligned to game release cycles and platform milestones.
- Evaluate emerging gaming technologies — dedicated game server solutions (Agones, Nakama, PlayFab), streaming game backends, and real-money gaming platform tooling — making pragmatic build-vs-buy recommendations aligned with roadmap and regulated market expansion.
- Act as the technical bridge between engineering, game design, product, compliance, and business stakeholders — translating gaming product requirements into robust, scalable system designs.
Required Capabilities
- Expert-level Node.js — REST APIs, GraphQL, WebSockets, microservices, and event-driven architecture for real-time gaming and iGaming use cases.
- Deep understanding of scalable backend system design and distributed architecture patterns.
- Security best practices: OAuth2, JWT, IAM, RBAC, encryption, API security — with specific experience in fraud prevention, anti-cheat systems, and KYC/AML compliance frameworks common in iGaming.
- Knowledge of event sourcing, CQRS, and serverless architecture.
- Hands-on experience with real-time gaming systems: Socket.IO, WebRTC, game state synchronisation, and high-concurrency platforms capable of supporting thousands of simultaneous game sessions.
- Design AI-powered workflows for gaming — including personalisation engines, dynamic difficulty adjustment, fraud/cheat detection, and player behaviour analytics using LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or open-source models).
- Architect RAG pipelines and agent-based automation systems for in-game support, player retention workflows, and intelligent game recommendation engines.
- Collaborate with AI engineers and game designers to embed intelligent automation, adaptive game logic, and responsible gambling safeguards into core product flows.
- Deep understanding of RGS architecture — game round lifecycle, RNG integration, paytable and bonus engine design, and the certified API contracts between an RGS and downstream aggregators or operators.
- Hands-on experience integrating with iGaming platforms, aggregators, and sportsbook data providers — including wallet APIs, bet settlement flows, live odds ingestion, and regulatory back-office reporting pipelines.
- Familiarity with game client technologies (Unity, PixiJS, Phaser, HTML5 / WebGL) to the extent of designing server-authoritative backends, SDK contracts, and asset delivery pipelines that game development teams build against.
- Strong expertise in message-driven architectures and asynchronous communication patterns using RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, Redis Streams, and cloud-native messaging services.
- Design and implement event-driven microservices architectures using message brokers for high-throughput gaming workflows — including game events, wallet transactions, bet placement, settlement processing, player activity tracking, notifications, and real-time analytics.
- Deep understanding of messaging patterns including publish/subscribe, message queues, event routing, dead-letter queues (DLQ), retry mechanisms, idempotency, message ordering, delivery guarantees, and fault-tolerant distributed processing.
- Hands-on experience designing scalable event pipelines for real-time gaming platforms where consistency, low latency, and transaction reliability are critical.
