Duty Doctor (Hospital) – Job Description
Job Title: Duty Doctor / Resident Medical Officer (RMO)
Department: Medical Services / Clinical Operations
Reporting To: Medical Superintendent / Chief Medical Officer / Hospital Administrator
Job Summary:
The Duty Doctor is responsible for providing immediate medical care to patients in OPD, IPD, emergency, and ICU (if applicable), ensuring timely diagnosis, treatment, and coordination with consultants for quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:1. Patient Care & Clinical Management
- Examine and assess patients on admission and during hospital stay.
- Provide initial diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Attend emergency cases promptly.
- Stabilize critical patients before consultant review.
- Monitor admitted patients regularly and record progress.
- Prescribe medications, investigations, and treatment as per protocol.
- Handle medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, trauma, seizures, etc.
- Perform basic and advanced life support when required.
2. Ward & IP Management
- Conduct ward rounds and monitor patient condition.
- Follow up on treatment plans advised by consultants.
- Maintain continuity of care during shift handover.
- Ensure proper admission and discharge processes.
- Manage referrals and transfers when needed.
3. Emergency Services
- Attend casualty / emergency department round the clock.
- Handle medico-legal cases as per hospital policy.
- Coordinate with ambulance and emergency team.
- Ensure emergency preparedness.
4. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate case sheets and EMR records.
- Prepare discharge summaries and death summaries (if needed).
- Record vital signs, treatment updates, and incidents.
- Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, NABH standards, and medico-legal norms.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records.
5. Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with consultants, nurses, technicians, and support staff.
- Inform consultants regarding patient deterioration.
- Counsel patients and attendants regarding treatment and progress.
- Ensure smooth communication during shift changes.
6. Infection Control & Safety
- Follow infection control protocols.
- Ensure safe use of medicines and procedures.
- Report adverse events and sentinel incidents.
- Participate in code blue / disaster drills.
7. Administrative Duties
- Supervise junior staff / interns if assigned.
- Ensure availability of emergency drugs and crash cart readiness.
- Assist in audits, NABH documentation, and quality initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
- MBBS from recognized medical college.
- Valid National Medical Commission / State Medical Council registration.
- ACLS / BLS certification preferred.
- Experience in casualty / ICU / ward management preferred.
Required Skills:

- Ability to work in shifts.
Working Conditions:
- Rotational shifts (day / night).
- On-call duties during emergencies.
- High-pressure hospital environment.
Preferred Experience:
- 1–3 years in multispeciality hospital (preferred).
- Freshers with internship exposure may also be considered for junior duty doctor roles.

Pay: ₹40,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
