Based on current job postings across India for Python/Django Interns, companies looking to hire emerging developers typically require a specific mix of core programming skills, backend familiarity, and practical tools.

Technical Skills RequiredCore Python Programming

Interns aren't expected to know everything about architecture, but they must be completely comfortable with writing clean, functional Python.

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP): Solid grip on classes, inheritance, and functions.
Data Structures: Mastery over lists, dictionaries, tuples, sets, and basic algorithms.
Virtual Environments: Ability to use venv or virtualenv to manage package dependencies cleanly.

Django & Backend Web Development

MVT Architecture: Understanding Model-View-Template pattern and how data flows through a Django app.
Django ORM & Databases: Ability to write database queries using Python code instead of raw SQL, write migrations (makemigrations, migrate), and link tables (One-to-Many, Many-to-Many).
Django REST Framework (DRF): Almost every Python web internship demands basic knowledge of REST APIs. Interns should know how to use Serializers, APIViews/ViewSets, and handle JSON data.
Authentication & Security: Familiarity with user login/registration flows, JWT (JSON Web Tokens), or session-based authentication.

Essential Tools & Infrastructure

Version Control (Git/GitHub): The absolute #1 requirement. Knowing how to branch, commit, push, and create pull requests without breaking the codebase.
Databases: Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL (moving beyond just default local SQLite).
API Testing Tools: Ability to test endpoints independently using Postman or cURL.

Soft Skills & Daily Responsibilities

When companies hire Python/Django interns, their typical daily tasks include:

Writing & Debugging Code: Fixing small bugs in existing backend services or writing minor helper scripts.
API Integration: Connecting the backend with third-party APIs (like payment gateways, SMS providers, or AI models).
Collaborating with Frontend: Working alongside React/Flutter developers by delivering clean JSON endpoints for them to consume.
Documentation: Writing clear API docs and maintaining clean README.md files.

What Makes an Intern Stand Out (Bonus Skills)

If a student wants to comfortably clear interviews at tech hubs like Infopark or Bangalore, having any of these gives an immediate edge over freshers:

Basic Cloud/Deployment: Knowing how to deploy an app to a live server (VPS like Ubuntu/DigitalOcean, Render, or AWS EC2).
Docker Basics: Understanding how to containerize a Django app.
AI/ML Integration: Since many Python backends power AI tools, basic exposure to integrating OpenAI/LLM APIs into a Django backend is highly valued right now.
