Purpose of duty
To ensure the quality, integrity and safety of welded joints by verifying that they meet all relevant codes, standards and specifications as given in manufacturing drawings of auxiliary modules & other products @ DCK. Also to comply with specified quality standards along with implementation of QMS, EMS and OSHAS at shop floor.
Main responsibilities
1. Production Engineering & Execution
- Plan and coordinate daily welding and fabrication activities based on production requirements.
- Ensure production is carried out as per approved drawings, manufacturing procedures and specifications.
- Monitor productivity, manpower, material availability and production schedules.
- Identify production bottlenecks and implement corrective actions.
- Optimize welding sequence, fit-up, fabrication methods and resource utilization.
- Coordinate with Production, Quality, Planning and Engineering teams for smooth execution.
- Ensure proper control and traceability of materials, components and fabricated assemblies.
2. Welding Engineering
- Provide technical support for various welding and fabrication activities.
- Develop, review and implement approved WPS/PQR/WPQ requirements.
- Verify welding parameters such as current, voltage, polarity, travel speed, preheat and interpass temperature.
- Ensure correct welding consumable selection, storage, baking and handling.
- Monitor welding processes such as SMAW, GTAW, GMAW/FCAW and SAW, as applicable.
- Control welding sequence and distortion through appropriate fabrication practices.
- Support development and qualification of new welding procedures where required.
- Provide technical solutions for welding defects such as porosity, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, undercut, cracks and distortion.
- Ensure compliance with applicable welding codes and standards such as ASME, AWS, ISO 3834, EN or project-specific requirements.
3. Welding Quality & Inspection
- Coordinate inspection activities at different stages of fabrication.
- Verify fit-up, root gap, alignment, joint preparation and dimensional requirements before welding.
- Monitor welding inspection during and after welding.
- Coordinate NDT activities such as VT, PT, MT, UT and RT, as applicable.
- Review NDT reports and ensure that acceptance criteria are met.
- Ensure proper identification and traceability of weld joints and inspection status.
- Raise and follow up NCRs related to welding and fabrication.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions for welding and quality issues.
- Ensure repair welding is performed using approved procedures and properly inspected.
4. Drawing & Technical Document Control
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, BOMs and technical specifications.
- Review applicable ITP/QAP, inspection checklists and manufacturing procedures.
- Ensure production personnel understand relevant technical requirements.
- Maintain welding and inspection records including WPS, PQR, welder qualifications, weld maps and NDT reports.
- Support preparation of manufacturing and inspection documentation.
5. Welder & Manpower Competency
- Verify welder qualification and competency against job requirements.
- Monitor welder performance and identify training requirements.
- Support welder qualification and performance testing.
- Develop welding competency through on-job training and technical coaching.
- Ensure only qualified welders are assigned to applicable welding activities.
6. Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve welding productivity, quality and cost.
- Reduce welding defects, rework, repair rate and material wastage.
- Implement lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Analyze welding rejection and repair trends and implement preventive actions.
- Support introduction of improved welding technologies, fixtures and fabrication methods.
7. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure welding and fabrication activities comply with applicable safety requirements.
- Ensure proper controls for hot work, welding fumes, gas cylinders, electrical safety and PPE.
- Conduct/participate in toolbox talks and risk assessments related to welding activities.
- Stop unsafe or non-conforming work and ensure corrective action before continuation.
Key Technical Competencies
- The candidate should ideally have:
- Strong knowledge of welding processes and fabrication technology.
- Good understanding of WPS, PQR and Welder Qualification/WPQ.
- Knowledge of welding consumables and material compatibility.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols.
- Knowledge of welding defects, their causes and corrective actions.
- Knowledge of NDT methods and inspection requirements.
- Understanding of ITP/QAP and inspection hold/witness points.
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection and fabrication tolerances.
- Knowledge of applicable welding/fabrication standards and codes.
- Ability to perform welding parameter verification and process monitoring.
- Understanding of material traceability and documentation.
- Knowledge of NCR, RCA and CAPA processes.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Metallurgy, Welding Technology or related discipline.
Experience:
- Typically 5 to 8 years of experience in fabrication, welding, production engineering or inspection.
- Experience in heavy fabrication, pressure vessels, piping, machinery manufacturing, structural fabrication or similar industries would be advantageous.
Preferred Certifications
- Candidates with one or more of the following would be preferred:
- International Welding Engineer / International Welding Technologist / International Welding Specialist
- AWS/CSWIP welding-related qualification
- NDT Level II – VT/PT/MT/UT/RT
- Welding Inspector certification
- ISO 3834 knowledge/experience
- ASME/AWS/EN/ISO welding code experience
