Job Title : Duty Doctor
Reports To : Department Head/ Medical Superintendent

Job Summary : A Duty Doctor is primarily responsible for providing clinical care, managing emergency conditions, and overseeing patient safety during their shift. Perform routine ward rounds, documentation of patient status, Reports, Discharge Summary and Inform critical cases to senior Consultant.
Key Responsibility:
1. Examine and assess patients presenting to casualty/OPD/ward/ICU, take clinical history, perform physical examinations.
2. Diagnose illnesses and acute conditions, initiate treatment plans, prescribe medications, manage common acute or chronic conditions.
3. Be first responder for emergencies perform resuscitation, basic/advanced life support (CPR, stabilization), urgent interventions as needed.
4. Monitor admitted patients (vitals, progress), perform ward/ICU rounds, update treatment and investigation orders, escalate to seniors when required.
5. Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records: admissions, daily progress notes, investigations, prescriptions, discharge/ referral summaries.
6. Coordinate with nurses, paramedics, specialists and support staff; communicate with patient’s families about status, treatment plans, prognosis.
7. Manage shift-based duty rosters, ensure proper handover to incoming doctor, maintain continuity during night/weekend/holiday shifts.
8. Follow hospital protocols, emergency response protocols, infection control and standard treatment guidelines; ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.
Qualification:
MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution, with valid medical registration and completion of internship.
Experience:
1. Overall: Minimum 2- 3 years in a healthcare/hospital setting able to handle ICU/emergency independently.
2. Relevant: 1-2 yrs in a hospital handling of Duty / casualty / ER / independent shifts / ICU and emergencies.
3. Age: 25-32 Years.
Soft Skills:
1. Communication: Ability to explain diagnoses, treatment plans and medical information to patients (and family members) clearly, in simple language; good bed-side manner.
2. Empathy & compassion: Empathy, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal abilities to build trust, handle distress, and support families.
3. Time management & multitasking: Handling multiple patients, emergencies, investigations, documentation and shift duties all often at once.
4. Attention to Detailing: when diagnosing (patient history, exam, lab results), prescribing drugs (dosage, interactions), documentation, follow-ups.
5. Problem Solving: In many cases a duty doctor has to make quick judgements: diagnose, start treatment, decide referral or escalate to Consultant.
6. Teamwork & collaboration: Collaborate with nurses, paramedics, senior doctors, other staff with smooth coordination is essential for patient care.
7. Professionalism, ethics & confidentiality: Maintaining patient confidentiality, adhering to medical ethics, showing integrity, respecting patients and colleagues.
8. Honesty.
Technical Skills:
1. Clinical examination & diagnostic: Taking history, physical examination, assessing symptoms, diagnosing a wide variety of conditions.
2. Interpretation of investigations: Ability to read and interpret lab reports, radiology, imaging (X-rays, ECGs, etc.), pathology results.
3. Emergency care, basic life support & acute care: Handling emergencies: resuscitation, stabilization, first-aid, critical care, sometimes basic procedures (e.g. suturing, wound care, airway management depending on hospital) especially in casualty/ER settings.
4. Prescription & medication management: Knowledge of pharmacology, prescribing appropriate drugs, dosage calculations, monitoring for side-effects and interactions.
5. Patient record-keeping and documentation: Maintaining good medical records, discharge summaries, admission notes, test reports important for continuity of care, legal & regulatory compliance.
6. Understanding of treatment protocols & infection-control / sterilization practices: Especially in hospital settings, knowing and following standard protocols, safety and hygiene procedures, infection prevention, sterilization.
