ROLE SUMMARY
The QC Executive is responsible for ensuring that all insulating varnish products manufactured at Bawa Polymers meet defined quality standards, customer specifications, and regulatory requirements. The role encompasses incoming raw material inspection, in-process quality checks, finished goods testing, documentation, and continuous improvement activities. The QC Executive plays a critical role in maintaining product consistency, reliability, and compliance throughout the production cycle.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Raw Material Inspection & Incoming Quality Control
- Inspect and test all incoming raw materials — including resins, solvents, hardeners, additives, and pigments — against defined specifications and approved supplier standards before release to production.
- Collect representative samples from incoming batches as per sampling plans (e.g., AQL standards) and perform or supervise relevant physical and chemical tests.
- Verify supplier certificates of analysis (COAs) and cross-check against internal acceptance criteria for parameters such as viscosity, acid value, hydroxyl value, moisture content, and flash point.
- Raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for rejected materials and coordinate with the procurement team for supplier returns or concession approvals.
- Maintain incoming material inspection records and update the raw material status register (approved / hold / rejected) in the system.
2. In-Process Quality Checks
- Perform regular in-process checks at all critical stages of varnish manufacturing — mixing, reaction, thinning, filtration, and filling — as per the defined control plan and process SOPs.
- Monitor and verify process parameters including batch temperature profiles, mixing times, resin cook temperatures, reflux conditions, and solvent addition sequences.
- Check intermediate product properties at key reaction stages: acid value, viscosity (at defined temperature using Ford Cup / Brookfield viscometer), colour (Gardner scale), non-volatile content (NVC), and flash point.
- Immediately flag out-of-specification readings to the production supervisor and initiate hold procedures until investigation and corrective action are completed.
- Verify that correct raw materials, correct quantities, and approved batch manufacturing records (BMRs) are being followed by the production team.
3. Finished Goods Testing & Release
- Conduct comprehensive testing of finished insulating varnish batches before release for dispatch, covering all parameters as per the product specification sheet.
- Perform and interpret tests including: viscosity, non-volatile content (NVC), dry film thickness, drying time (set-to-touch, tack-free, hard dry), dielectric strength, volume resistivity, and thermal endurance as applicable.
- Carry out application tests by applying the varnish on standard test substrates (e.g., copper wire wound coils or glass cloth) to assess film formation, penetration, adhesion, and flexibility.
- Evaluate colour, clarity, and appearance of each finished batch for consistency with approved reference standards.
- Prepare and issue the Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each approved batch, and ensure the batch is correctly labelled before dispatch.
- Maintain the finished goods testing register, batch approval records, and retain reference samples for each released batch as per retention policy.
4. Calibration & Laboratory Management
- Maintain, calibrate, and service all QC laboratory instruments and equipment including viscometers (Ford Cup, Brookfield), ovens, flash point testers, dielectric strength testers, moisture analysers, and weighing balances.
- Maintain a calibration schedule and logbook; ensure all instruments have valid calibration certificates traceable to national standards (NABL-accredited labs where applicable).
- Ensure the laboratory is maintained in a clean, organised condition with all chemicals properly labelled, stored, and disposed of as per SDS guidelines.
- Manage laboratory consumables inventory and raise timely indent requests for replenishment.
5. Documentation & Quality Records
- Maintain accurate and complete quality records including raw material inspection reports, in-process check sheets, batch testing reports, COAs, NCRs, and CAPA records.
- Ensure all documents are legible, correctly filled, signed, dated, and filed as per the document control procedure.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly QC summary reports and present quality data trends to the QC Manager.
- Support internal and external audits (customer audits, ISO audits, regulatory inspections) by ensuring all records are readily available and compliant.
- Assist in the preparation and review of quality documents including SOPs, test methods, product specifications, and work instructions.
6. Non-Conformance Management & CAPA
- Identify, document, and investigate all non-conformances — whether in raw materials, in-process stages, or finished goods — and initiate the NCR process.
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) using tools such as 5-Why analysis or Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams for recurring quality failures.
- Define, implement, and verify Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) in coordination with production, procurement, and R&D teams.
- Track open NCRs and CAPAs to closure within defined timelines and report overdue actions to the QC Manager.
- Maintain a customer complaint register; investigate field complaints related to product performance (e.g., poor adhesion, blistering, early gelling, low dielectric strength) and provide timely responses.
7. Customer & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all products comply with applicable national and international standards including BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and IS standards relevant to insulating varnishes.
- Review and fulfil customer-specific quality requirements as outlined in customer drawings, technical specifications, and quality plans; raise deviations for any requirements that cannot be met.
- Prepare and maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Technical Data Sheets (TDS) for all products; ensure they are current, accurate, and accessible.
- Support the QC Manager in maintaining and renewing quality certifications (ISO 9001, etc.) and responding to customer quality questionnaires or audits.
8. Continuous Improvement & R&D Support
- Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives, process optimisation projects, and waste reduction programmes.
- Collaborate with the R&D team during new product development and scale-up trials — conducting testing on developmental batches and providing quality feedback.
- Identify opportunities to improve testing methods, reduce testing cycle times, and enhance the reliability of quality data.
- Contribute to the development and validation of new test methods or analytical procedures as required by new product lines.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related technical discipline. M.Sc. Chemistry or B.Tech in relevant field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 2–4 years of experience in a QC role within a paint, varnish, resin, specialty chemicals, or polymer manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with standard paint and varnish test methods (viscosity, NVC, drying time, dielectric strength, adhesion, flexibility) is essential.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems and documentation practices is required.
- Prior experience in insulating varnish, electrical insulation materials, or coatings for the electrical industry is a strong advantage.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Strong analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail and a systematic approach to testing and documentation.
- Good understanding of chemical properties of resins, solvents, and additives used in varnish formulations.
- Proficient in operating and maintaining common laboratory instruments: viscometers, ovens, flash point apparatus, dielectric testers, and moisture analysers.
- Knowledge of statistical quality control (SQC) tools and basic data analysis.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while maintaining accuracy.
- Good communication skills for cross-functional coordination with production, procurement, and R&D teams.
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word); experience with ERP/LIMS systems is an advantage.
