We're hiring for Senior Structural Engineer in Chennai location.
Experience: 7+ years
Work location: Poonamallee, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Key Responsibilities
Design and Analysis:
- Design PEB steel structures, LGSF design and RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) elements for modular buildings, ensuring compliance with relevant IS codes (e.g., IS 800, IS 456).
- Apply industrialised construction principles to optimise designs for efficient fabrication and assembly.
- Utilise Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to create and manage 3D models of structural components.
- Collaborate with architects and other engineers to integrate structural solutions with overall building design.
Design for Manufacturability & Assembly (DFMA):
- Ensure designs adhere to DFMA principles, minimising on-site construction complexity and maximising prefabrication in a controlled factory environment.
- Work closely with the procurement team to select readily available and industry-standard materials for efficient procurement and cost optimization.
Structural Bill of Materials (BOM) & Construction Documentation:
- Assist the tendering team by providing approximate quantities of building structural estimates, such as Super-Structure (Steel Required) & Sub-Structure (foundation).
- Develop detailed structural BOMs, specifying all required steel and RCC components for each project.
- Create clear and concise construction drawings and shop drawings for fabrication and assembly guidance.
Pre-Fabrication Quality Assurance and Approvals:
Structural Engineering:
Prepare and submit structural design documents for review and approval by the designated regulatory or approval authorities.
Address any comments or revisions arising from the review process to ensure design compliance.
Material Quality:
- Specify the required steel grade and certifications (IS codes relevant to your location) for all structural components.
- Review mill certificates to ensure materials meet specified standards.
Fabrication Drawings:
- Provide detailed fabrication drawings with clear dimensions, tolerances, weld specifications, bolt-hole locations, and any necessary surface treatments (galvanization, painting).
- Ensure drawings are reviewed and approved by a qualified engineer before fabrication begins.
Shop Welding Procedures:
- Establish and document welding procedures that comply with relevant standards (e.g., AWS - American Welding Society).
- Specify welder qualification requirements and testing procedures.
Quality Control Procedures:
- Outline a comprehensive Quality Control (QC) plan for the fabrication shop. This should include procedures for material inspection, dimensional verification, weld inspections (visual and non-destructive testing), and paint/galvanising inspection.
Erection Quality:
Erection Drawings:
- Collaborate with BIM Engineer to provide detailed erection drawings that clearly show the erection sequence, bolt tightening sequence, and any specific lifting procedures for heavier components.
Erection Team Qualifications:
- Ensure the erection team is qualified and experienced in handling PEB structures.
- Verify they possess the necessary licenses and certifications for steel erection.
Site Inspections:
- Conduct regular site inspections throughout the erection process to verify compliance with the erection drawings and identify any potential problems.
- Focus on critical aspects like foundation integrity, column alignment, connection details, and proper bolt-tightening procedures.
Quality Control Documentation:
- Require the erection team to maintain detailed QC documentation. This should include records of inspections, weld certifications, and corrective actions taken for any non-conformances.
Additional Considerations:
Shop Approval: Consider visiting the fabrication shop to verify their capabilities and compliance with your QC procedures (optional but beneficial for larger projects).
Independent Inspections: Engage a third-party inspection agency to conduct additional quality checks at the fabrication shop and during erection (especially for critical structures).
Project Communication: Maintain open communication channels with the fabrication shop, erection team, and the general contractor to ensure everyone is aware of potential issues and can collaborate effectively for successful project completion.
Construction Methodology Development:
Embrace Innovation: Challenge the team to constantly think outside the box. Encourage experimentation with new construction techniques and materials suited for Prefab.
Standardization with Flexibility: Develop standardized Prefab methods for efficiency, but also allow for customization to meet specific project requirements.
Develop a "Prefab Playbook": Create a standardized approach for developing construction methodologies for different project types. This playbook should incorporate best practices, lessons learned, and adaptable solutions for various challenges.
Focus on Sustainability: Integrate sustainable practices into the construction methodology. This could include using recycled materials, optimizing energy efficiency, and minimizing waste.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Client Focus: Develop a strong understanding of client needs and incorporate their feedback into the Prefab design and construction process. This fosters long-term client relationships and helps build a strong reputation in the Prefab market.
- Prefab Expertise Sharing: Educate other stakeholders like architects and clients about the benefits and limitations of Prefab construction. This promotes a collaborative approach and avoids unrealistic expectations.
- Work effectively with the project team, including architects, mechanical & electrical engineers, and the procurement team.
- Participate in project meetings to discuss design considerations, constructability, and cost implications.
- Maintain clear and open communication with stakeholders to ensure project success.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
- Proven experience in designing PEB and RCC buildings, preferably in the modular construction sector.
- Proficiency in structural design software such as STAAD Pro, ETABS, and AutoCAD.
- Strong understanding of IS codes, DFMA principles, and industrialised construction methods.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant building codes IS 800, IS 875, IS 456, IS 7215, ISO 19650, and COBie standards.
- Proficiency in design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA) & Process Failure mode effect analysis (PFEMA) principles.
- Familiarity with project management methodologies (e.g., Lean, Agile) is beneficial.
- Strong attention to detail and quality control.
- Ability to research and identify suitable building materials based on technical specifications and industry standards.
- Familiarity with construction material procurement processes.
