Full job description

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Shipbuilding team. The candidate will be responsible for planning, supervising, coordinating, and executing mechanical engineering activities related to ship construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of onboard mechanical systems and equipment.

The ideal candidate should have strong knowledge of marine mechanical systems, machinery installation, piping systems, propulsion equipment, pumps, HVAC systems, and shipyard production processes.

Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical Engineering & Shipbuilding

Supervise and coordinate mechanical engineering activities during ship construction and repair projects.
Review mechanical drawings, technical specifications, P&IDs, and equipment layouts.
Plan and oversee installation of onboard mechanical equipment and systems.
Coordinate machinery installation, alignment, testing, and commissioning activities.
Ensure mechanical works are executed according to approved drawings, specifications, and classification requirements.
Support production teams during fabrication, erection, outfitting, and commissioning stages.

Marine Machinery & Equipment

Oversee installation and commissioning of:
Main engines
Auxiliary engines / DG sets
Gearboxes
Propulsion systems
Shafting systems
Pumps
Compressors
Boilers
Heat exchangers
Steering gear systems
HVAC and ventilation systems
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems

Piping & Outfitting

Supervise installation and testing of marine piping systems.
Review piping layouts, isometric drawings, and P&IDs.
Coordinate installation of valves, pumps, filters, and associated equipment.
Ensure proper alignment, supports, and accessibility for maintenance.
Monitor hydrostatic and pneumatic testing activities.

Planning & Project Coordination

Prepare work schedules and monitor mechanical project progress.
Coordinate with Naval Architects, Electrical Engineers, Production Engineers, QA/QC, and subcontractors.
Monitor manpower, materials, tools, and equipment requirements.
Identify potential project delays and implement corrective actions.
Participate in project review and progress meetings.

Testing & Commissioning

Develop and execute testing and commissioning plans.
Supervise machinery trials and system performance testing.
Participate in harbour acceptance tests and sea trials where applicable.
Troubleshoot mechanical issues during commissioning.
Ensure all systems meet operational and performance requirements.

Quality & Compliance

Ensure compliance with approved quality procedures and inspection plans.
Coordinate inspections with QA/QC teams and classification societies.
Ensure compliance with applicable marine standards and statutory requirements.
Review inspection reports, test certificates, and commissioning records.
Ensure proper documentation and handover of mechanical systems.

Safety

Ensure compliance with shipyard HSE policies and procedures.
Conduct risk assessments and toolbox talks when required.
Ensure safe working practices during lifting, machinery installation, testing, and commissioning.
Promote a strong safety culture among team members and subcontractors.

Required Qualifications

B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
Additional qualification or certification in Marine Engineering / Shipbuilding will be an advantage.

Experience

Minimum 8–15 years of relevant experience.
Experience in Shipbuilding, Ship Repair, Marine Engineering, Offshore, or Heavy Engineering is preferred.
Experience in managing mechanical installation and commissioning activities in a shipyard environment is highly desirable.

Required Technical Skills

Strong knowledge of marine mechanical systems and equipment.
Knowledge of propulsion and shaft alignment.
Experience in machinery installation and commissioning.
Strong understanding of marine piping systems and P&IDs.
Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Understanding of pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, and auxiliary machinery.
Familiarity with HVAC and ventilation systems.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
Knowledge of QA/QC and inspection procedures.
Familiarity with classification society requirements.
Knowledge of project planning and execution.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office.
Knowledge of MS Project / Primavera is an added advantage.
