JOB DESCRIPTIONGeneral Manager – HospitalPosition Details

Designation: General Manager – Hospital
Department: Hospital Administration / Operations
Reporting To: Managing Director / CEO / Hospital Director
Location: Hospital
Employment Type: Full-Time

Job Summary

The General Manager will be responsible for the overall operational, administrative, financial, and service management of the hospital. The role involves ensuring smooth day-to-day functioning of all departments, maintaining high standards of patient care and service quality, managing employees and resources, ensuring regulatory and accreditation compliance, and supporting the hospital's growth and financial performance.

The General Manager will act as a key link between the Management, Medical Team, Nursing, Administration, Finance, HR, Engineering, Operations, and Support Services.

Key Responsibilities1. Hospital Operations

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the hospital and ensure smooth functioning of all departments.
Ensure efficient utilization of hospital infrastructure, manpower, equipment, and other resources.
Monitor patient flow, admissions, discharges, OPD, IPD, emergency, diagnostics, pharmacy, and support services.
Identify operational bottlenecks and implement corrective actions.
Ensure uninterrupted availability of essential hospital services.
Coordinate with department heads to resolve operational issues promptly.
Develop and implement SOPs, policies, and operational procedures.

2. Patient Experience & Service Quality

Ensure high standards of patient care, safety, satisfaction, and service quality.
Monitor patient complaints, feedback, grievances, and service recovery.
Establish systems to improve patient experience and reduce waiting times.
Ensure professional and courteous behavior by all hospital staff.
Conduct regular rounds and review service standards across departments.

3. Financial & Business Management

Monitor hospital revenue, expenses, profitability, and operating costs.
Work closely with the Finance Department to prepare and monitor budgets.
Review department-wise financial performance and identify areas for improvement.
Monitor billing, collections, credit management, insurance/TPA processes, and revenue leakage.
Control unnecessary expenditure while maintaining quality of services.
Support development of new revenue streams and business opportunities.
Review monthly MIS and key financial indicators with management.

4. Human Resources & Team Management

Coordinate with HR for recruitment, manpower planning, training, performance management, and employee retention.
Ensure appropriate staffing levels across departments.
Monitor employee attendance, discipline, productivity, and performance.
Develop leadership and accountability among department heads.
Conduct regular review meetings with HODs and key personnel.
Promote teamwork, professional conduct, and a positive workplace culture.

5. Medical & Clinical Coordination

Coordinate with the Medical Director, Consultants, Nursing Head, and Clinical HODs for smooth clinical operations.
Facilitate resolution of operational issues affecting clinical departments.
Ensure availability of required clinical support services.
Support implementation of clinical quality and patient-safety initiatives.
Ensure proper coordination between clinical and non-clinical departments.

6. Quality, Accreditation & Compliance

Ensure compliance with applicable healthcare laws, statutory requirements, hospital regulations, and accreditation standards.
Coordinate hospital quality and accreditation initiatives such as NABH or other applicable standards.
Monitor implementation of SOPs, quality indicators, audits, corrective actions, and risk-management programs.
Ensure proper documentation and readiness for internal and external inspections.
Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and patient safety.

7. Facility & Infrastructure Management

Oversee Engineering, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Security, Laundry, Dietary, Biomedical, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, and other support services.
Ensure proper maintenance of hospital buildings, infrastructure, equipment, and utilities.
Monitor preventive maintenance schedules and breakdown response.
Ensure adequate safety, cleanliness, infection-control support, and environmental standards.
Coordinate hospital expansion, renovation, and infrastructure projects where required.

8. Vendor & Procurement Management

Oversee procurement and vendor-management activities in coordination with authorized departments.
Evaluate vendor performance, quality, pricing, and service levels.
Ensure timely availability of essential materials, consumables, and services.
Support negotiation with vendors and service providers.
Ensure appropriate inventory control and reduction of wastage.

9. Safety, Risk & Emergency Management

Ensure implementation of hospital safety policies and emergency preparedness plans.
Coordinate disaster management, fire safety, security, and emergency response systems.
Monitor incident reports and ensure appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
Conduct regular safety reviews and mock drills as required.
Ensure patient, staff, visitor, and hospital property safety.

10. MIS & Management Reporting

Prepare and review daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
Monitor key performance indicators such as:
OPD & IPD volumes
Bed occupancy
Average length of stay
Revenue
Patient satisfaction
OT utilization
Diagnostic utilization
Pharmacy performance
Collection efficiency
Employee productivity
Complaints and grievances
Present performance reports and improvement plans to senior management.

11. Business Development

Support the hospital's business growth and market-development strategies.
Develop relationships with corporates, insurance companies, TPAs, doctors, referral networks, and other stakeholders.
Identify opportunities for new services, specialties, and partnerships.
Support marketing and community outreach initiatives.
Monitor competitor activities and local healthcare market trends.

Qualifications

MBA / PG Diploma in Hospital Management / Healthcare Management / Hospital Administration preferred.
Bachelor's degree in any relevant discipline; candidates with MBBS, BHA, BHM, BBA, or related qualifications may also be considered based on experience.
Strong knowledge of hospital operations and healthcare administration.
Knowledge of NABH/accreditation requirements is preferred.
Strong understanding of hospital finance, HR, quality, and operational processes.

Experience

Preferred: 8–15 years of relevant experience in hospital administration/operations, with significant experience in a managerial or leadership position.

Experience in managing a multi-specialty hospital will be an advantage.
