Job Summary
The role exists to provide hands-on specialist backend engineering capability for WRB Digital Channels, delivering secure, scalable and reliable Java-based services that support critical digital banking journeys. The role holder is an individual contributor with 7+ years of backend engineering experience, expected to translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions, contribute to engineering quality and reliability, and support safe delivery across agile squads without direct people management accountability.
- Build and deliver secure, scalable Java backend services for WRB Digital Channels using Spring Boot, microservices and API-led architecture.
- Contribute as an individual contributor within agile squads, translating business requirements and technical designs into high-quality, tested and deployable software.
- Support reliable change delivery by collaborating with product owners, architects, engineering leads and globally distributed teams across the release lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
This is an individual contributor Specialist backend engineering role accountable for delivering secure, reliable and scalable backend services while contributing to engineering quality, release delivery, risk management and continuous improvement.
Software Engineering Delivery
- Design, develop, test, debug and deploy backend services based on business requirements, user stories and technical design documents.
- Develop RESTful APIs and microservices using Java, Spring Boot 3.x, messaging systems and relational or NoSQL databases.
- Write and maintain automated tests, support code quality practices and take ownership of code repository quality where applicable.
- Participate in CI/CD and release deployment activities using Azure DevOps, Maven or Gradle, Helm charts and container platforms.
Architecture, Reliability and Engineering Standards
- Work closely with architects, technology leads and security champions to align solutions with target architecture, security controls and engineering standards.
- Analyse application logs and operational metrics using ELK, Logstash, Kibana, Grafana and Prometheus to support debugging, monitoring and service reliability.
- Contribute to automation, simplification and adoption of modern engineering practices including containerisation, Kubernetes, OpenShift, AWS EKS and cloud platforms.
- Identify and manage technical delivery risks, minimise technical debt and support compliance with system delivery controls and bank standards.
Collaboration, Conduct and Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with product owners, business leads, domain architects, chapter leads and engineering leads to deliver complex features, epics and releases.
- Share technical knowledge, contribute to engineering community practices and stay current on emerging backend, API, DevOps and cloud technologies.
- Demonstrate strong conduct, risk awareness and accountability by living the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct and escalating risks or compliance matters appropriately.
Risk, Compliance and Secure Delivery
- Apply secure engineering practices, risk controls and regulatory expectations throughout design, build, testing, deployment and production support activities.
- Embed security-by-design principles into solution delivery, including dependency management, secrets handling, vulnerability remediation and appropriate access controls.
- Support audit, risk and control requirements by maintaining clear evidence, traceability and documentation for design decisions, testing outcomes and release activities.
- Proactively identify, communicate and remediate delivery risks, vulnerabilities, operational issues and control gaps, escalating appropriately where required.
- Contribute to safe change delivery by supporting release readiness, production validation, incident learning and timely closure of risk or compliance actions.
- Partner with engineering leads, service owners and control stakeholders to ensure issues are understood, prioritised and resolved without compromising customer outcomes.
Technical Ownership and Engineering Excellence
- Own assigned technical deliverables end to end, ensuring solutions are maintainable, observable, scalable and aligned to agreed engineering standards.
- Break down complex technical requirements into clear engineering tasks, anticipate dependencies and support predictable delivery across sprint and release milestones.
- Use production insights, defect trends and feedback loops to improve design choices, operational resilience and long-term maintainability of backend services.
- Contribute to code reviews, reusable patterns, documentation and automation opportunities that improve delivery quality, engineering productivity and service reliability.
- Champion disciplined engineering practices such as clean code, automated testing, peer review, branching discipline, build quality and knowledge sharing within the squad.

Key Experiences
- 7+ years of hands-on backend engineering experience, preferably in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices and enterprise-scale digital platforms.
- Experience supporting CI/CD, automated testing, release delivery, production support, observability and secure engineering practices in regulated environments.
Certifications / Qualifications (only where mandatory)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline; cloud, security or agile certifications are beneficial but not mandatory.
Languages
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills required for technical collaboration, documentation, stakeholder updates and global team engagement.
