Required Skills & Qualifications • Experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5 years focused on API management and Google Apigee platform (Apigee Edge and/or Apigee Hybrid). Proven track record of designing, developing, and optimizing large-scale API solutions using Apigee in enterprise environments. • Apigee Expertise: Hands-on mastery of Apigee Edge and Apigee Hybrid. Deep understanding of Apigee’s core architecture and components – e.g. Edge Management Server, Router, Message Processor, Analytics services, Developer Portal, Cassandra data store, ZooKeeper coordination, etc. Ability to configure and troubleshoot the full Apigee stack, from API proxy design, shared flow development and tracing, to underlying platform services.

Development Engineer
Overview: We are seeking an experienced Apigee API Platform Development Engineer to lead the design, security, and management of our APIs and API gateway platform. In this role, you will leverage deep expertise in Apigee API traffic management , REST API security patterns (Basic Auth, OAuth 2.0, mTLS), and CDN integration (Akamai) to ensure our APIs are scalable, secure, and high-performing. You will also play a key role in Apigee architecture oversight and spearhead our transition from Apigee Edge to Apigee Hybrid deployment. The ideal candidate is a Senior API Platform Engineer with 8+ years of experience (including substantial Apigee Edge/Hybrid experience) in building enterprise-grade API management solutions,designing robust API proxies and flows, and implementing advanced security and traffic-control policies

Key Responsibilities • Apigee Platform Management: Design, develop, and manage API proxies and flow configurations on the Apigee platform, implementing policies for traffic routing, load balancing, caching, and rate limiting to handle high API volumes efficiently. Ensure the Apigee Edge Gateway is optimized for performance and reliability, and offload common tasks (security, mediation, quota enforcement) from backend services. API Security Enforcement: Implement and enforce API security policies and standards across all proxies. This includes authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g. HTTP Basic Auth, OAuth 2.0/OIDC token validation, JWT handling) and mutual TLS (mTLS) for secure service-to-service and client-to-gateway communication. Regularly review and update security patterns to comply with enterprise and regulatory requirements (e.g. multi-factor auth, token encryption, IP whitelisting, certificate management).

- Akamai Integration & Routing: Coordinate with networking and CDN teams to integrate Apigee with Akamai for external API traffic. Configure Apigee proxies and virtual hosts to work behind Akamai’s content delivery network and Web Application Firewall (WAF), ensuring global routing efficiency and protection against DDoS or malicious traffic. Optimize DNS routing, caching strategies, and forward proxy settings so that external consumers experience low latency and high reliability when accessing our APIs.
- System Architecture & Performance: Oversee the Apigee platform architecture and environment. Monitor the health and performance of all Apigee components (Edge Routers, Message Processors, Management Servers, Cassandra, Zookeeper, etc.) and tune the system for optimal throughput and stability. Establish analytics and monitoring for API traffic and errors, analyze trends (latency, throughput, error rates) and lead capacity planning to ensure the platform can scale to meet future demand. Drive root-cause analysis and remediation of any platform issues, ensuring high availability of the API gateway.
- Apigee Hybrid Migration & Cloud Deployment: Lead the migration from Apigee Edge to Apigee Hybrid (or Apigee X) on a Kubernetes or hybrid cloud environment. Develop detailed migration plans, timelines, and rollback strategies. Set up Apigee hybrid architecture including configuration of the management plane and runtime plane (e.g. installing Apigee in Kubernetes clusters, configuring ingress gateways, synchronizers, etc.). Ensure feature parity, security controls, and performance stability during and after the migration. Collaborate with DevOps teams to automate deployments and integrate Apigee configuration into CI/CD pipelines for Hybrid

- Collaboration & Best Practices: Work closely with API developers in team, API backend consumer teams, cloud infrastructure teams, and security architects to advise on API design and implementation that aligns with Apigee best practices and our enterprise standards. Provide guidance on versioning, error handling, and API lifecycle management in Apigee. Train and mentor development teams on using Apigee’s capabilities (e.g. shared flows, service callouts, policy configuration) effectively, and establish internal best-practice guidelines for API development, publication, and consumption.
- Governance and Standards: Define and uphold governance standards for our API platform – including documentation requirements, design patterns, re-usable components, access control, and compliance with security and data privacy policies. Ensure that APIs are well-documented and that developer portal content (reference docs, usage guides) is maintained for consumers. Champion API design-first approaches (using OpenAPI/Swagger specifications) and consistent policy reuse and organization to streamline development and enforcement of standards across different teams.
