Mechanical Design Engineer – Conveyors & Material Handling Systems

About the Role: We are building industrial-grade material handling systems as part of our automation platform. We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who can own the design and engineering of conveyors, transfer mechanisms, positioning conveyors, and diverting systems typically handling payloads around ~50 kg.

This role is ideal for someone with strong hands-on experience in industrial automation equipment—particularly conveyor subsystems driven by induction motors, VFDs, gearboxes, and robust mechanical latching/stopper/indexing mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities

1. Conveyor System Design & Ownership

Own the mechanical design of conveyor lines and modules including: Chain conveyors, roller conveyors, gravity roller conveyors, roller accumulation conveyors (incl. pressureless accumulation concepts where applicable) Overhead conveyors, Continuous vertical conveyors / vertical slat conveyors, Positioning / indexing conveyors and precision stop-and-go stations. Define conveyor architecture, interfaces, and mechanical standards for repeatable builds.

2. Transfers, Diverts & Positioning Mechanisms

Design and integrate transfer and diversion mechanisms such as: Pop-up transfers, 90° transfers, cross transfers, Diverters (pusher, paddle, plow concepts where applicable), Stoppers, gates, escapement mechanisms, and latching/locking arrangements, Positioner stations / locating stations for repeatable stop accuracy and alignment

3. Drive System Engineering (Motors, VFDs, Gearboxes)

Size and specify drive systems including: Induction motors, VFDs, and suitable control interfaces, Gearboxes (helical/worm/planetary as needed), couplings, shafts, keys, Work with electrical/controls teams to finalise motor/VFD selection, speed control ranges, and safety interlocks.

4. Design for Reliability & Maintainability

5. Engineering Analysis & Documentation

Perform and/or review: Load calculations, torque/speed sizing, structural checks, bearing life estimates, Basic stress checks and where needed FEA for frames/supports and critical mounts. Own documentation package: GA drawings, manufacturing drawings, BOMs, installation and service notes.

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with: Controls/automation for sensor placement, zone logic readiness, and interlocks, Electrical for VFD panels, motor wiring strategy, and safety circuit requirements, Manufacturing & assembly for DFM/DFA, jig strategy, and repeatable build quality, Support commissioning, trial runs, debugging, and iterative improvements.

Required Qualifications & Experience :

Typically 5–7 years in mechanical design of industrial conveyors and material handling automation.
Strong exposure to conveyor types: chain, roller, gravity roller, overhead, vertical conveyor/slat, accumulation systems.
Drive system competence: induction motors, VFD-based speed control, gearboxes, and industrial powertrain fundamentals.
Mechanism experience: stoppers, latches, escapements, transfers, diverters, and positioning/locating stations.
Ability to create manufacturing-ready documentation (drawings + BOMs) and work with vendors/fabricators.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

Exposure to sensors and industrial automation interfaces (photoelectric sensors, prox sensors, encoders).
Field experience in commissioning/debugging conveyor lines (tracking, jams, noise/vibration).
Experience in domains like warehousing, packaging, assembly lines, FMCG, automotive, logistics.
