Position: Production IT Support Engineer / Desktop Support Engineer

1. Job Purpose
We are looking for a Production IT Support Engineer / Desktop Support Engineer to provide hands-on IT support for the production floor and manufacturing operations.
The candidate will be responsible for installation, configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance of desktop computers, production-line PCs, industrial PCs, printers, barcode scanners, network connectivity and production-related IT systems.
The key objective of this role is to ensure continuous availability of IT systems supporting production operations and minimize production downtime due to IT-related issues.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Production Floor IT Support
- Provide first-level and hands-on IT support across the production shop floor.
- Support desktops, laptops, industrial PCs(Portwell laxsons & Advantech), then clients and production terminals.
- Install and configure new Industrial PCs required for production lines.
- Configure Windows XP &10, drivers, applications and required production software.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software and operating-system-related issues.
- Attend IT breakdowns on production lines and restore systems at the earliest.
- Ensure production-critical computers and IT equipment are available and operational.
- Coordinate with Production, Maintenance, Engineering and Quality teams for IT-related issues.
B. Production Line PC Installation & Maintenance
- Install and commission desktops/industrial PCs at production stations.
- Configure IP addresses, computer names, network connectivity and required applications.
- Perform preventive maintenance of production PCs and related equipment.
- Replace faulty RAM, HDD/SSD, SMPS, keyboard, mouse, monitor and other components.
- Maintain proper records of installed systems and replacement components.
- Support relocation and installation of IT equipment whenever production lines are changed or expanded.
C. Printer, Scanner & Barcode Support
- Install and troubleshoot 2D barcode scanners and barcode printers.
- Support thermal/label printers used on production lines.
- Troubleshoot printer connectivity, driver and printing issues.
- Support scanners, handheld terminals and other shop-floor devices.
- Coordinate with vendors for specialized equipment when required.
D. Network & Connectivity Support
- Troubleshoot basic LAN, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and TCP/IP connectivity issues.
- Check network cables, ports, switches and network connectivity at production stations.
- Configure IP addresses and basic network settings.
- Identify and resolve connectivity issues affecting production systems.
- Escalate complex network issues to the central IT/network team.
E. Manufacturing Applications Support
- Provide basic support for MES / production applications / shop-floor applications.
- Support production operators in resolving basic application-related issues.
- Coordinate with application/IT teams for MES and production application problems.
- Support connectivity between production PCs and manufacturing systems.
- Assist during installation, testing and commissioning of new production applications.
Knowledge of MES is preferred but not mandatory.
F. IT Hardware & Software Support
- Install and troubleshoot Windows operating systems.
- Install authorized software, drivers and security updates.
- Troubleshoot Microsoft Office and other standard applications.
- Perform hardware diagnostics and component replacement.
- Ensure antivirus/endpoint protection is functioning properly.
- Maintain basic system health and security.
G. IT Asset Management
- Maintain records of desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, scanners and other IT assets.
- Maintain asset allocation and equipment movement records.
- Track hardware replacements and repairs.
- Maintain records of production-line IT equipment.
- Support periodic IT asset verification.
H. Incident Management
- Attend IT incidents raised by production users.
- Prioritize incidents based on their impact on production.
- Record and track IT issues through the ticketing/helpdesk system.
- Maintain proper documentation of problems and resolutions.
- Escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate IT team.
- Maintain proper shift handover and pending-issue records.
3. Required Technical Skills
Must Have
- Basic knowledge of Windows OS installation and troubleshooting.
- Good knowledge of desktop/laptop hardware.
- Basic knowledge of LAN, TCP/IP and network troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of printers, scanners and barcode devices.
- Basic knowledge of computer peripherals and hardware replacement.
- Ability to troubleshoot production-floor IT equipment.
- Basic knowledge of MS Office.
- Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Good to Have
- Exposure to automotive manufacturing / auto-component manufacturing.
- Experience supporting production-line computers.
- Knowledge of MES / ERP / shop-floor applications.
- Knowledge of barcode systems.
- Knowledge of industrial PCs.
- Basic knowledge of Active Directory.
- Basic knowledge of DHCP/DNS.
- Exposure to IT ticketing systems.
- Basic understanding of CCTV / IP cameras / access-control systems.
4. Educational Qualification
Diploma in:
- Electronics & Communication
- Electronics
- Any other relevant IT/Electronics discipline
5. Experience
0–3 years of experience in:
- Desktop Support
- IT Support
- Production IT Support
- Manufacturing IT Support
- Shop-floor IT Support
- System Support
6. Preferred Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate should:
- Be comfortable working directly on the production shop floor.
- Have hands-on experience troubleshooting computers and peripherals.
- Be capable of attending production-line IT breakdowns independently.
- Have good communication with Production and Engineering teams.
- Be willing to work in a manufacturing environment.
- Be flexible to support production requirements, including shifts if applicable.
- Have a strong sense of urgency when an IT issue affects production.
- Be willing to learn manufacturing applications and IT systems.
7. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Production IT downtime ,incident response time,IT incident resolution time,First-time resolution rate,Production-line system availability,Preventive maintenance completion,
- Ticket closure rate,Asset record accuracy ,Recurring IT issues reduction
8. Working Environment
The position will involve working primarily on the manufacturing shop floor, supporting production users and production-line IT equipment.
The candidate may be required to:
- Move between different production areas.
- Attend urgent production-related IT breakdowns.
- Install/reinstall computers and peripherals.
- Work during planned maintenance activities.
- Support shift operations whenever required.
9. Key Requirement
Candidates with hands-on experience supporting desktops/industrial PCs directly on automotive production lines will be strongly preferred over candidates having only corporate/office desktop support experience.
