Who We Are
Blink operates one of the world's largest EV charging networks. We build the hardware, software, and services that keep drivers moving. Scale is real here, and so is the responsibility.
Why This Role Exists
We are growing fast and our platform needs someone who can hold the technical bar high from the inside. Not a manager, but the strongest engineer in the room. Someone who codes, designs, unblocks, and sets the direction. Someone the team naturally turns to when things get hard, and who makes the whole team better just by being there.
Who You Are
You are a hands-on engineer who thinks at a system level. You write production code and you also design the systems that others build on. You are obsessed with reliability, you debug with data, and you make pragmatic decisions that age well. You have naturally adopted AI and modern tooling as part of how you work. You take ownership when things go wrong and you fix them permanently, not repeatedly. You come with a strong analytical foundation and a restlessness to continuously improve the platform you own.
What You Bring
Must Have
-
Strong hands-on Java and Spring Boot experience in large scale production systems
-
Designing and evolving distributed cloud native microservices systems covering scalability, HA, resiliency, fault isolation and recovery
-
Deep experience with Kafka and event driven architectures including async behaviour, retries, idempotency and eventual consistency
-
Docker and Kubernetes, container orchestration, scaling, resource management and deployment strategies
-
Redis and caching strategies, knowing when and how to cache and the tradeoffs involved
-
AWS fundamentals including deployments, networking, managed services and cloud native design patterns
-
Strong RDBMS design and performance tuning with PostgreSQL and working experience with MongoDB
-
Distributed systems design patterns including circuit breakers, bulkhead, retry, backoff and eventual consistency
-
Payment systems and transaction management, idempotency, exactly once processing and handling failures gracefully without double charging
-
Strong data consistency and integrity patterns, understanding where eventual consistency is acceptable and where it is not, especially in billing critical flows
-
Audit trails, immutable logging and financial data integrity across pricing and billing workflows
-
Security first design, zero trust principles, access control, secure integrations and safe defaults across application, data and infrastructure layers
-
Observability and production debugging using Prometheus, Grafana, logs and alerting, using data to proactively improve reliability
-
TDD mindset with strong ownership of unit, integration and contract testing, designing systems that are testable by default
-
Actively using Gen AI and modern tooling to improve productivity, problem solving and engineering quality
-
Strong analytical and problem solving skills with focus on root cause not just symptoms
Good to Have
-
Familiarity with payment gateways such as Stripe, Braintree or similar
-
PCI DSS awareness and compliance basics
-
Pricing engine design including rate cards, dynamic pricing and invoicing systems.
-
API design, versioning and contract best practices across microservices
-
Service mesh and API gateway concepts for inter-service traffic, security and observability
-
Feature flags, canary releases and progressive delivery for safe deployments
-
Performance profiling and tuning at application and database layer
-
Familiarity with distributed tracing and OpenTelemetry
-
Cloud cost awareness and optimisation at scale
-
foundation and a restlessness to continuously improve the platform you own.
Responsibilities
-
Act as the primary technical owner and go-to engineer for the pricing, payments and billing platform, setting the technical direction and raising the engineering bar from within the team
-
Design and evolve cloud native microservices systems that are reliable, secure, and built to scale, with long term maintainability in mind
-
Write production code regularly, lead by example, and set the standard for code quality, test coverage and engineering practices within the team
-
Own and drive critical technical decisions around data consistency, transaction integrity, and payment reliability, where getting it wrong has direct business and customer impact
-
Conduct meaningful code reviews that improve design, catch systemic risks, and help engineers grow
-
Lead deep technical debugging and root cause analysis on production incidents, driving permanent fixes rather than repeated workarounds
-
Proactively identify and reduce architectural and technical debt through steady incremental improvements
-
Design systems that are observable, testable, and secure by default, reducing production surprises and regression risk
-
Use metrics, logs, and operational data to continuously improve platform reliability, uptime, and performance
-
Mentor and guide engineers in the team, helping them grow technically and make better design decisions independently
-
Collaborate closely with QA, Product, and DevOps to ensure quality and release readiness across the billing and payments platform
-
Stay current with evolving tools, patterns, and technologies, bringing in better ways of working including AI where it adds real value
