Job DescriptionPosition: Manager – Mechanical

Department: Engineering / Maintenance Reports To: Plant Head / Head – Engineering Industry: Food Processing (IQF & Jaggery Manufacturing) Location: [Insert Plant Location]

Job Purpose

To lead and manage the mechanical, ammonia refrigeration, and electrical maintenance functions of the IQF and Jaggery plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of all mechanical equipment, ammonia refrigeration systems, coolers, compressors, and associated electrical systems, while ensuring compliance with safety and statutory norms.

Key ResponsibilitiesAmmonia Refrigeration System

Oversee the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the ammonia refrigeration plant including compressors, condensers, evaporators, receivers, and control panels.
Ensure ammonia charging, leak detection, and safety protocols are strictly followed as per statutory (PESO/Factory Act) guidelines.
Plan and execute preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for ammonia plant machinery to avoid breakdowns.
Monitor ammonia consumption, refrigerant levels, and system efficiency; recommend corrective actions.
Ensure availability of PPE, safety showers, gas detectors, and emergency response systems for ammonia handling areas.

Compressor & Cooler Systems

Manage the upkeep of screw/reciprocating compressors, chillers, blast freezers, IQF tunnels, and cold storage coolers.
Ensure optimal performance of cooling towers, condensers, and evaporative systems.
Conduct root cause analysis for equipment failures and implement corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
Coordinate spare parts planning, vendor management, and AMC for critical compressor and cooling equipment.

Electrical Systems

Supervise maintenance of electrical panels, motors, control systems, VFDs, and power distribution related to mechanical and refrigeration equipment.
Ensure electrical safety compliance, earthing, and periodic testing/certification of electrical installations.
Coordinate with electrical maintenance team for uninterrupted power supply to critical refrigeration and processing equipment.

General Mechanical & Plant Maintenance

Plan, implement, and monitor preventive maintenance (PM) schedules for all mechanical equipment across the IQF and Jaggery processing lines.
Minimize breakdowns and downtime through proactive maintenance planning and spare inventory management.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives (TPM/5S/Kaizen) for mechanical reliability and energy efficiency.
Manage AMC contracts, external vendors, and OEM coordination for major equipment.

Team & Compliance Management

Lead, train, and supervise mechanical, refrigeration, and electrical maintenance teams (technicians, operators, supervisors).
Ensure compliance with safety standards, statutory requirements (Factory Act, PESO, Pollution Control norms), and internal SOPs.
Maintain documentation: maintenance logs, ammonia audit records, breakdown reports, and safety checklists.
Prepare budgets for spares, consumables, and capital equipment; control maintenance costs.
Coordinate with production, quality, and safety departments to align maintenance activities with plant output targets.

Key Skills & Competencies

Strong technical knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems, compressors, and industrial cooling systems.
Sound understanding of electrical systems related to mechanical/refrigeration equipment.
Knowledge of food industry safety standards, ammonia handling regulations, and factory compliance.
Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and problem-solving skills.
Team leadership, vendor management, and budgeting skills.
Working knowledge of preventive maintenance systems and maintenance software (CMMS preferred).

Qualification & Experience

Education: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (Refrigeration & Air Conditioning specialization preferred).
Experience: 10–15 years in mechanical/refrigeration maintenance, with at least 5 years in a managerial role, preferably in IQF, cold storage, food processing, or ammonia-based refrigeration plants.
Certification in Ammonia Refrigeration Safety / Statutory operator license (preferred).

Other Requirements

Willingness to work in shifts and respond to emergency breakdowns.
Ability to work in cold storage/processing environments.
Strong commitment to safety-first culture.
