Full job description

Department: Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS)
Location: Mediversal Simran Multi Speciality Hospital
Reporting To: Head – CTVS Department

Position Summary

The Perfusionist is responsible for operating and managing extracorporeal circulation equipment during cardiac and major vascular surgeries. The role involves conducting cardiopulmonary bypass procedures, monitoring physiological parameters, managing blood conservation techniques, and ensuring the safe functioning of heart-lung machines and related equipment to support optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:-

1. Cardiopulmonary Bypass Management

Operate and monitor the heart-lung machine during open-heart and major vascular surgeries.
Establish, maintain, and terminate cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures.
Monitor and regulate blood flow, oxygenation, temperature, and anticoagulation parameters during surgery.
Maintain appropriate perfusion pressures and physiological parameters throughout procedures.
Collaborate closely with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and operating room staff.

2. Intraoperative Monitoring

Monitor arterial blood gases, activated clotting time (ACT), hematocrit, electrolytes, and other critical parameters.
Adjust perfusion strategies based on patient condition and surgical requirements.
Identify and respond promptly to perfusion-related complications and emergencies.
Document all perfusion-related activities and observations during procedures.

3. Equipment Management

Prepare, prime, and test heart-lung machines and associated perfusion equipment before procedures.
Ensure proper functioning, calibration, and maintenance of perfusion equipment.
Manage inventory and availability of disposables, oxygenators, tubing sets, and related supplies.
Coordinate preventive maintenance and quality assurance checks.

4. Blood Conservation & Autotransfusion

Operate cell saver and blood conservation systems during surgeries.
Assist in blood management strategies to minimize transfusion requirements.
Monitor and manage anticoagulation and reversal protocols under physician guidance.

5. ECMO & Mechanical Circulatory Support

Assist in the initiation, management, and monitoring of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) systems where applicable.
Support ventricular assist devices (VADs), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), and other circulatory support devices.
Participate in emergency ECMO deployment and transport services as required.

6. Quality & Safety Compliance

Ensure adherence to infection control, patient safety, and quality standards.
Follow departmental protocols, accreditation standards, and regulatory guidelines.
Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate records and documentation of all perfusion procedures.

7. Training & Education

Participate in training programs for healthcare professionals and students.
Stay updated with advancements in perfusion technology and cardiac surgical practices.
Attend continuing education programs, workshops, and conferences.

Qualification & ExperienceEducation

Bachelor’s Degree in Perfusion Technology (B.Sc. Perfusion Technology) or equivalent recognized qualification.
Master’s Degree in Perfusion Technology preferred.

Experience

Freshers may be considered for junior positions.
1–5 years of experience in a cardiac surgery center preferred.
Experience in ECMO management is an added advantage.

Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) – Mandatory.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Preferred.
ECMO certification/training – Preferred.

Required Skills

Thorough knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology and perfusion techniques.
Expertise in operating heart-lung machines and extracorporeal circulation systems.
Knowledge of ECMO, VADs, IABP, and blood conservation technologies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to respond effectively during surgical emergencies.
Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
High attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Successful management of cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.
Compliance with perfusion and patient safety protocols.
Accuracy and completeness of perfusion records.
Equipment readiness and maintenance compliance.
Reduction of perfusion-related complications.
Participation in quality improvement and educational activities.
